What type of barley is used in a good mix?It comes in different forms and I'm wondering which is palatable for rollers and pigeons in general.Another Q;Is there a purpose to feed partial barley to rollers?Ive heard some guys say it brings their birds lower then others say it makes 'em fly higher.---------- Kelly

if you can get malt barley, that's the best, but hard to find. (Watch out that you aren 't getting treated seed for planting!) Othewise I get "waxy" barley, which is a nice clean hulled barley. It's great for homers, but not real good for rollers. With my birds it tended to make them fly lower and route more. It is a good additive to see how much they really want to eat. They will leave barley unless they are really hungry. Spud

Hi Kelley, Barley is a good grain to use for rollers in moderate levels and usually is used as a training seed to either slow a kit down or get one in condition. Barley is high in fiber and comes in differrent forms. The best but is expensive is a pearled barley if you can get it the next would be a malt barley in which Spud referred to and than you have your regular barley that they use for horse supplements. Barley can test a good kit for volumn of feed if you chase them with it at the end of feeding. Rollers dont particularly care for Barley so if you feed it last after thier regular mix and they leave it behind you know than that the kit isn't hungry but rather pretending that they are. This is a good way to find out whether your on the mark or not. Give it a try you'll be pleased at the results. Ivan

I always thought that barley was also the food to keep the birds low flying. And to slow down wingbeat, Personally i have never used barley because i have very little uplift where i live so i didn't think there was a need for it but the tip from Ivan makes great sense and worth a try for anyone getting their birds in shape. By the way welcome to the site Ivan we are 1 big happy family here Lol. Regards W@yne uk

Nick is right. Barley is a great substitute for corn. Also it can double as a filler with red milo for wheat.
