Roller kid ,its a fun hobby but if you want to keep other breeds also, make another loft, dont keep that bird with a crest in the same loft,it will only delay your advancement with rollers. Hector C

Roller Kid,
That looks like a good job for just doing it in one day. It don't have to look fancy as long as it serves it's purpose. Every one you build you will learn something from. Like everyone says just have fun and enjoy your birds. Frankie

My first kitbox was an old chest of drawers (chesterdrawers) that somebody threw out. You will build a ton of them before you're through...hell, I am still building them.
One of them birds is not a roller you know?(LOL) I had commies, Tipplers, Birmingham Rollers, and Homers in my first kit box.
Enjoy!

RK, When I was but about 7 yrs of age I had my first pigeon and I did the same as Nicksiders used a chest of drawers with chicken wire over the front to put in my two homers. My dad drove truck for an LTL and had access to many palletts and shipping crates to which later he brought home and built me one that I may have to glean from a 8mm movie camera to make as a print so I can send it in for all to view. I like what you have done and commend you on a good job however you may want to take an cover around the bottom of the kit box with some kind of lattice or wire to keep any varmits out mainly cats or you will have toes missing on your birds and that would be a downer for you when you went out and saw your birds missing toes or feet. Make sure thier are no gapping holes in which any vermine can get in because believe you me a weasel or mink can get through a very small hole as long as thier head can go through thier body is like gumby LOL! Have fun is the bottom line and by all means enjoy the hobby. Ivan

RK, Man thanks for sharing your kit loft with us.. You don't know it, but you just took alot of old rollermen back 40 years and down a pleasant memory lane. On question, are you sure that black bald in the middle of the kit isn't one of Stan's starfire rollers? How can you tell if it is or? LOL Roller kid.. I just moved and have some birds I can't fly here at the new house. If you would like a pair, I will ship them to you free. My E-mail address is Extravelocity95@aol.com.. If you interested in the birds.. KGB

When I was 12 I made a pigeon loft out of an old chest type deep freeze. It was about 8 feet long. I stood it up straight and put a few nest boxes and perches in it. I used some old boards and wire to put a front on it but I built it far enough inside the freezer where I could still shut to freezer door. I took out the bottom rubber seal and from the bottom up halfway the rubber side on both sides where they could get plenty of air when the door was shut. It still was able to be heated in the wintertime with just a 100 watt light bulb I put in. I put the light in at first where I could go out at night and look at the birds. But I found out later that winter on cold nights it served as a good heater. I found that the freezer liner made clean up easier to and I didn't have to worry about any critters. When I get a few more rollers I plan on making me a couple more now. Regards, Frankie

Rollerkid, Nice job, you will have nicer lofts in the future but you will remember this one the longest. Just read the post from all the old farts, they are remembering their childhood, through your loft. My mother called them egg suckers because they were so ugly, she said they could suck eggs! Enjoy this time of life, you are forging memories. Thanks from a misty oldfart.

Hey Rollerkid, Your loft is great. I guess I qualify as an old fart, too. I had to pay for all my materials when I was 13 or so. That meant the whole loft was made of 2x2's. Big hole chicken wire was cheap, too. I bummed a chicken coop (4'x4') from my grandpa and 'aquired' other materials from scraps off new construction near my house. Always get permission! Blue milk crates with a board across the front made nest boxes. I never heard of a kit box back then, flew them all, all the time. Save those pictures! Janene

Jerrie, That's just another cage. I enjoyed the heck out of seeing Keng's first kit box. I still remember my first loft not so different from Keng's. I got a pair of black grizzle squabs and spent hours training them to come back to the loft. I spent months trying to convince my friends they rolled when I clapped my hands. You know, I still think they rolled when I clapped my hands! {grin} My Good friend Tim Wyse had the first roller I ever seen in my life. She was a blue grizzle and I was awe struck by her rolling. Me and Tim made up a song about Alberty in the 3rd grade and I can still remember it today. LOL Corny I know, but it was the dreams of kids and my first two young black grizzles were off Alberty. While most young boys were talking about captain America and Batman in Robin in the 3rd grade,, Tim and I were talking about Alberty and Brown Winger. Man, being young was fun and care free.. I could have more fun sneaking into some farmers barn and swing from the rafters trying to catch some barn pigeon with white on it, That I had been scoping out for days, Than I can spending 10 grand these days. Why is that????? KGB

Nothing wrong with that kid at all, my first loft was a little fort that we had built at the bottom of a cottonwoood tree. You had to crawl into it and the floor was lined with straw. I used to sit in there for hrs watching the birds , they just mezmorised me.
