Hi Everyone,
I'm kinda new to this forum. I just want your guys opinon. I used to live with my parents and I was able to keep as many pigeon as I wish. But now that I live in another city, Sacramento in California, I unable to have pigeons because I live in an apartment. But I have this crazy idea, I can bring up a pair with me. I can keep this pair in a rabbit cage inside or a hutch outside. What do you guys think? Is this crazy? What will the apartment managers say? They did say that I can have BIRDS as pets. And pigeons are pets. What are the risk for me and the pigeon, as in health wise?
Thanks

If the apartment manager said you can have pet birds then go get you a pair. I would still have a kit or two and a few pairs to breed from if I lived in a apartment. Justin

Hi Jonny,
I can identify with your enthusiasm. My first pigeons were a wild pair of squabs I captured and raised in a rabbit hutch. Pigeons are a little large and on the messy side for indoor birds. If the bird must be indoors, you may be better off to start with a smaller bird such as a parakeet which would be easier and would interact more with you. You can let them out at times to fly around the apartment, and they will bond with their caregiver if kept as a single bird. You and your pigeons could experience more enjoyment if you could keep them outside in a secure locked rabbit hutch, and fly them for exercise periodically. Best to do this prior to feeding them when they are hungry to avoid having them stray for prolonged periods and risk them getting lost. Avoid overcrowding. A pair of a smaller breed such as birmingham rollers would be sufficient. However, if you let them reproduce, it would become too crowded. If you can't let them fly, best to keep a show pair of pigeons. Pigeons shed some feathers periodically, and heavily during their annual fall molt. They also shed "bloom", a white powdery dust from their feathers, to which some chronically overexposed individuals have become allergic. At a minimum, it would make a mess around your cage. They produce a relatively large amount of excrement that must be cleaned regularly. Like other animal (and human) excrement, it may contain bacteria that may potentially cause human infection or contaminate food, thus handwashing after contact is important. Good luck.

Sorry Jonny,
After more carefully rereading your post, I realized you are already experienced in pigeons. With my experience just letting some of my pairs breed and sometimes reproduce in the garage in breeding cages, it can get pretty messy and smells unless cleaned often. I'd go for the outdoor option with birmingham rollers if your hutch is secure.

ArlenS,
I guess i will buy a rabbit hutch and put the pair outside. By the way I live on the 2nd floor, so I don't think I will need that hutch that secure. Also I was thinking that I can bring down the offsprings produce by the pair back to my parents place and leave them there. My parents own a little farm and some of my birds, not good rollers, fly freely there.
Thanks for the reply

If its a 1 bedroom apartment i'd have my old bird kit in the living room and fly them out the window you want your yearlings in the kitchen train these while you make tea, and fly your young birds out the bedroom and get your stock birds in the hall way. Steve

It sounds like you must have a small outdoor balcony? When I lived in Vallejo, CA (I was there during the earthquake - it cracked my apartment wall from ceiling to flooor), I had a pair of diamond doves in a walk-in cage with a little tree inside and large enough for them to fly in, on a small outdoor balcony. They could fly like little helicopters and were entertaining to watch and breed, like active pigeons on a small scale. However, when the male young grow up, father diamond doves will attack them and other males relentlessly, until they are removed. They could be managed with limited space but if they escape will probably, but not always, be lost.

Yea i do have a small balcony. But I'm not planning to fly the birds, lets see how long that last. I plan to just breed and keep it around. I don't think the city folks here like pigeons that very much. By they way I live in the Arden area sac_spinners. Which side of town do you live?

Jonny, Sounds like you are talking about a waffer kit box. They use them to fly portable. Over in Europe they compete with small kit boxes, some so small they can be attached to your back like a back pack. I'll see if I can find some pictures and post them or find a web site that might give you some ideas.

Some people did say that I'm crazy. And you know what I told them? Other people has parrots. What's wrong with a pair of pigeons? I bet that when someone first tried to keep parrots as pets in apartment, others said the same thing. Because some of those suckers are loud. See it doesn't sound so bad now huh? If you think about it is not that bad. Even some dogs are worse because they bark all night long.
Hey Sacspinner,
Do you have birds? If you do, do you fly? I just want to know.
Thanks,
j0nny

I raised a pigeon in my house in a large parrot cage for two years. I let her fly around every evening or so for 30 min to an hr and she was perfectly happy, I guess, she didn't really ever say so! LOL But when I would let her outside, you couldn't open the door cause she wanted back in. Best pet I ever had, she would still be in there but the cage cleaning was getting old! When I got my new rollers, I put her outside with them, she was scared to death of them. She sat for weeks giving me that "you bastard" look! But Spring came along and she found happiness!lol Other than being messy, their good house pets! I would have one at the office if they would let me!LOL
