What is the reasoning behind birds being double banded? I have seen several pics, including the latest posted by Ivan, and often wonder what the good is of it?..Thanks, Jerry

Jerry,
-In most cases one is a personalized band(name, address)
The other would be numbered band.---------

Hey Brian, I always thought double banding to balance a bird was a joke. Now are you saying that some actually do this?

Heck, maybe we could put little thrusters on them and really get them spinning! LOL

Club Band and Name band.Never heard of the balancing thing.Mostly, top breeders used Two bands, pride in who had bred the bird and also easier to find the owner if the bird strayed or was stolen.Sometimes rewards were given for the return of Quality Birds. It's still a lot easier and faster to pick up the phone and call the owner than check club regestries for the owners name.

I used to band with both, I stopped using the name bands because people would buy one from the bird farm or one would get past the shooters at the gun club, be found and someone 20 miles away calls and wants me to come get it. Mine get the club band and a kit snap on band.

I use both NBRC bands and a personalized band.

I also have some snap-on bands with my phone number on them. Easily removed and re-used if the bird is traded culled etc.----------

Hey Ron,
Why do you use both the NBRC bands and the Personalized bands? You can get the personalized bands that are numbered. You can put NBRC 07 on the top line your name in the middle line. And the last line you can put your phone number. They are numbered and serve the same purpose as the two bands?
Best of luck
Brian

Tony,

You might want to do a survey to see if "personalized"
snap-on bands are something you might want to carry.
I just had my phone number on mine.So anyone who finds a bird can call without trying to trace a band number.I have had several birds returned by non-pigeon people because of there being a number to call.

Hey Brian,

I hate to admit I am not as young as I use to be.I find them to hard to read, print is a little larger with just a number on them.LOL Besides they aren't dated so leftovers work next year.I know cheap.

Thanks Brian,
This year I already got club bands, and as an afterthought after losing some birds wished I had an additional name phone number option. Next year, I'll order bands that you can put all the info on as you suggested.

Hey Ron,
Nice talking to you on the phone a while ago. What I wanted to make sure that everyone knew what the difference between the NBRC bands, Personalized bands, and Personalized numbered bands. The difference between the Personalized bands and the Numbered personalized bands is just the amount of spaces your allowed on each. The Personalized band you have 21 spaces per line with 3 lines of text. The numbered personalized bands your only allowed 12 spaces with 3 lines of text. The font is the same size on both bands. Now the NBRC bands, numbers are the same font as the personalized numbered numbers. So you can see the text and number really easy. But I know some places use 4 lines which makes the font way to small. But the three lines is perfect for me right now LOL LOL. I just wanted to let everyone to know the difference between the two. I have been using numbered personalized bands for a good while now. As a matter of fact I'm waiting on the ones I just ordered. LOL LOL
Good luck this fall and best of luck in the breeding pen!

I always thought about banding your bird double band because the parents are click pair and the young birds will turn out to be a good keeper birds. Let say that every young you get from the click pair turn out to be stock quality. This is what i'm thinking.

Thanks for the input guys,
Brian Mid...I think I will use your suggestion next year, as I am also waiting on bands that I have on order. If I would have had those bands I might have got some of my birds back from my overfly...Jerry

I have always used the personalized bands on my birds...so they are double banded. They really work too. When I had my recent overfly....I recoverd 4 birds because of the bands. One bird was 22 miles away. I was sooo happy to recover the birds and they were worth the money for the bands...ten fold. I even had someone call me when they found a couple more birds that they found...dead..they too were from my A-team that I had lost.

The second reason is just like explained above....so that when a good bird leaves my loft...the new owner can tell without a doubt that it came from me.

When I cull a bird...I remove the band and re use it....if a bird leaves my loft as a cull for food or the shooting range...I cut the band off...so I do not have the problem like Brian used to have....calling me to pick up culls.

Again, I have recovered some great birds because of the address bands....

Jerry,
Yes I have them doubled banded with my address and phone number etc on one band. Paul explained it well however I have the addy band numbered as well. If someone does get a bird of mine those bands better match up or I know something funny went on with slippin a mickey LOL. I once retrieved a bird that was called in by a tug boat up the gorge pushing freight on the columbia river. She was part of a mini overfly I had experienced and the call came about 60 miles due east of me. I picked her up in Hood River. So yes indeed you can get a few of those good ones back that we all think went to roller heaven.

Ivan thats exactly the way i do it the address band that i use is numbered so it better match up with the club no# band mostly out here we hardly ever get a phone call of your lost bird but when it does happen it's a good sign
