Could anyone please comment on their experiences with egg fertility with various storage times prior to fostering? I am assuming that they are turned once or twice a day and kept at cool temperatures, however someone may wish to elaborate on that also.

thats hard to say, some eggs are not fertile to start with, i have with good luck up to 5 days may be 7 can,t remember,i really think you could go up to 10 with the right temp. 60-65 just guessing.i think turning twice a day will work, more the better, but we all have to work, cant stay home turning eggs all day. jerry

I have also had good luck in the 7 to 10 day range. I have kept them in the butter compartment in my fridge, in a bowl on my kitchen counter or in a bowl in my loft. I don't worry if it is between 40 and 75 degrees. I think turning eggs is overrated. I have stored eggs for years and never have turned one once. I know chicken eggs are turned in the incubator, but this is after the embryo has started to develop. There are a lot of things we do in rollers that we think is the only right way because that is the way it has always been done.

Most of my experiance is with other fowl eggs but A feww things I know work well there.

1. Eggs begin to decress in hatchability after 7 days

2. best kept around 55 degrees. Egss begin the germination prossess at 76 degrees

3 Eggs which are not rotated have a lower hatchability.

4. After hearing many times and then trying my self with several sets of eggs They seem to hatch better when turned an odd number of times versus an even number of times per day. I know it sounds like a wifes tale but hey it works.

5. Before setting the eggs set them out and let them reach room temp. for about 12 hrs.

hmm a bit depressing all I know fits on a postage stamp size post!! Ihope some of this helps. c.j.
