As I was selecting my pairs for the year and collecting the the hens to place with the cocks I noticed one was cooing and struting like a cock.My pairs are seperated for the winter and I thought maybe a cock somehow got in there.I grabbed it and checked the band no. This was a hen that did 3 rds last year. Placed her with a cock and now she acts like a hen. How about this guys. Please explain. Curtis

Does it sport a Home Depot name band....lol
Some hens will do that, especially when they are prime time for wanting to breed. Once she gets put in with a strappin' cock bird, she'll change her tune.

Curtis,
She was ready for a mate irregardless of your timetable. Hens will and do mate and many time if left alone will produce a nest with four eggs. Same thing with cock birds if all the hens are down on eggs in the nest boxes, you will ocassionally see oversexed cock birds mating with each other in a flypen.
I know pigs are not birds, but a good production boar will almost always have had sex with his male counterparts in the same sex pens when they were being raised. I've been watching animals all of my life and some of the behavior is different to say the least. The bit about the boars I observed when I raised same on the farm. It is also proven by ag research teams but it has been forever since I read the article.
Gregg.
