Three days ago I lost 15 of my 19 bird "A" team. There are times I truly feel that air birds ain't worth it and it may be show birds is what I need to envolve myself with.
Now I find myself with 4 decient kit birds; 10 pair of breeders; and a shit pot full of 2007 young birds. Kinda feeling sorry for myself and wondering about the stength of my program.
Oh well, what the hell.............

Nick, Quit whining and get your arse out there and start training those 2007 youngsters. Your not crazy about color breeding and you want to show breed? Scott, get on here and give Nick heck. That even makes me want to gag. On a serious note, don't feel bad. I've flown a few good kits away in my thirty seven plus years of flying these critters and it's a sick feeling every time you do it. It will happen again. The one thing that makes a great roller fancier is his ability to bounce back from adversity. Hang in there and it won't be long before you will have an even better A team. Nick buddy, here is a post you wrote about my overfly a bit ago..I hope you get them back, and I feel for ya. Like you, I had 4 that returned, but what the crap was I gonna do with 4 birds? I kept flying them, hoping that the others will join. I know it was wishful thinking on my part, but as I have done, and you also in the past, toughen it up and build better than before...I wish you the best my friend!..Jerry
Nick wrote: We have all went thru this so we feel for you my friend. I have lit my loft with lights and it did work somewhat. I have lost many over the years that stayed up after dark fell. I am going to permently light my lofts so that I can just throw on a switch and aluminate my whole back yard.
I also have owls in the area who will take them off the top of my loft at night.............I don't remember having all this going on when I was a kid with BOPs, but that was a long time ago and my memory may not strech that far back.
The next morning you may get 'em all back or at least the great majority of them.
Sorry my friend.

Nick, I felt the same way last year. I lost my only kit I had to fly in the spring. No back up kit, no holdovers.zip, nada, ziltch. I stepped up my breeders for the year and raised plenty and kept holdovers for this year. so far so good. Hang in there buddy, I did`nt feel better till I finally had a couple young birds really cut loose and then, BAM, it was all better again.

Nick,
Sorry for your lose. mYSELF I lost 9 birds the other day to 3 coons, and 1 possium so far. Man those birds much a sure been scared at night with all that partying going on around them. Let me not forget the hawks... I won't even get into that aspect. But after all that, I still like messing with those pigions, trying to train, and raise them from eggs to spinners in the sky. I love going to someone elses loft seeing how they manage, and train there birds. I'm just looking for ideas that I could use in my own operation here. Just keep us the good work, and if you want to try a pair of my birds, I will bring them with me when I come down to checkout your operation.

Started with a BOP that pushed them up and kept them up too long. In the mean time a front blew in and I never saw them again. The next morning two came in and another late in the afternoon. Then next morning one more arrived. Haven't seen anymore the last two days. I have 10 more birds I had in my second team box with 4 of them about 3 days away from the cull box.
I'm going to see what I can do with them....got until late April to have them ready for the WC. Might have to push a couple of the 2007 birds to fill in or maybe a couple of breeders. I am going to fly in the WC come hell or high water.
Thanks for the encouragement, all of you.

Nick, I had 3 major overflys last year and was still able to eeek out some of the top positions out here in Hawaii.Overflys are my single most problem, kinda like the mainland guys with predators. In my opinion it is mainly predicated with weather and wanting to give the birds regular exercise.Today there was no wind, sunny and beautiful,so guess what, the rollers don't fly.The parlors were out grazing as I sprayed them with the water hose. The homers young and old had freeloft.I have probably had 6 major overflys in my very short time with rollers. One thing I have learned is to hang on to them better by flying when the winds are there to push them down and hold them down.Sorry to hear about your unfortunate loss,I hope this helps....Aloha,Todd

I sure enjoy my racers.Been training my first ten over a month now and haven't lost one touch wood whereas if I'd been flying my Rollers all this time probably wouldn't have much left of them. These racers seem to have more ability to avoid the preds.I'm sure I'll have my share of losses with the racers but the success rate is definately better from what I've seen so far.Not letting the rollers go,don't get me wrong, but having the racers too is a source of some satisfaction when the rollers are locked down. ---------- Kelly

Hey Nick, If you truly are going to fly in the CUP, I suggest starting from a two foot steping stool, then progressing to a six foot stepladder, the on to the roof. Of course you will want to pratice your flapping, a lot!!:-) Grit your teeth and remember where you came from, one old fart to another.

Nick,
Today I flew my new kit, 8 scared birds, 6 fat breeder males waiting to be used again.
They didn't want to come out of the kitbox, the fat one didn't want to fly, no one kited together, I did see a few spins, then they did'nt come in, everywhere but in, on the ground, trees, loft. They finally came in very slowly.
I will keep plugging away again, adding new chicks and starting over from time to time. I hope my friend Nick does the same. It's just the life of an Roller Man.

Nick,
I know the feeling....it just gives you that lump in your stomach....felt it not to long ago. You just have to dust yourself off and get back on the horse and keep on moving forward....just remember...you can make more.
