Since getting back into pigeons over a year ago,I've only been able to find the regular type of wheat. The red hard stuff is not available in these parts. My breeders don't seem to eat much of it as they are given free feed all the time. What's the difference between the 2 types of wheat? Is the red type higher in protein?---------- Kelly

Kelly, I just read that red wheat has the highest protien but the white was pretty close. Climate and moisture was the reason some farmers grow the white wheat over the red and for the the availability in different areas. Sure must taste different though! I wouldn't hang your hat on that info, but i was skimming through a book and thats what I came up with. Somebody will enlighten us, Im sure! LOL Val

In some areas the hard red stuff is called winter wheat. They pant it in the fall and harvest in late spring and then plant again....probably cotton or sorigaum(sp).
The hard red wheat has a higher level of protien. Runs usually around 12 or 13 verses 10 or 11. I prefer it when I can get it.

They seem to....the shape of the wheat is different. The red tends to be rounder where the regualar white stuff seem to be longer. My birds tend to like the round stuff in any grain. I think it is more comfortable in the crop.
