What are the most common causes of a bird going light. I have a 5 month old bird that I picked up yesterday(after feeding the kit) and she felt very light. There was some food in the crop, but she felt like she had very little muscle on her breast. This bird was held over from the end of last season and has only been flying for a short time. I threw a little extra seed in the kit box and watched to see if she was eating. She was going after the food with out any problems. For the most part, this kit has been overfed, and a was about to start cutting back on rations to get better control over the birds. Any help is appreciated. Chad

It's either ill, or slow to get grain. I would isolate it just to be on the safe side.

Try worming it.A couple drops of Ivermec on the tongue and then with piperzine or something similar for roundworms.Ivermec won't kill roundworms.David

David is right on the money. Separate the bird and send some fresh droppings in a bagggie to Foy's for a diagnosis. Last year it happened on two different occaisions to young birds in my kit boxes, about 2-3 months apart. Both times it was round worms. Both times I treated the entire loft. These worms are carried I believe by an intermediate host, cricketts and grasshoppers, if I remember right. I used Foy's worm out gel. Maybe Tony has something that kills them all, too. (worms that is....lol!)

Thanks guys, I will seperate the bird tonight. I started putting D.E. into their feed last night. If it is worms, how long would it take for the D.E. to be effective? Chad

D.E. is for prevention but if you want immediate results then use Wormout Gel. This stuff will clean them out in about 24 hours. Tony carries this stuff. It will last you for a long time.

I used to mix powdered Ivermec in drinking water but they need to be real thirsty because some birds don't like the taste and may not drink. Also the powder I got at Foys didn't dissolve well at all in water. I much prefer and just used the Medpet brand Mediworm tablets available in this site store (100 tabs for $21.95). They are good for roundworms, hairworms and tapeworms. That way I know that a bird has been dosed for sure and I don't have to separate birds that I don't want to dose right then, or dose birds already previously treated, unnecessarily (such as is the case with dosing in drinking water). All you have to do is push the pill down the bird's throat far enough so that it can't spit it out. You must treat on an empty crop.

Thanks, Jay. Now I know where to get my Worm Out Gel the next time I order! After those two bouts with a squeaker going light (and my brother having similar problems with his Jacs), we decided to just worm every round when we weaned them. So we have had very few problems since....

PS. Jay, I am counting on your round table discussion at the convention and will list you in the itinerary as soon as we get ready to publish it. I have also gotten permission from the NBRC to begin accepting donations for the convention. At one point you mentioned that you wanted to make a personal donation of $100. You can send it in to me whenever it is convenient..no rush. We are planning to list all the sponsors on a special banner at the convention and in the bulletin.

Cliff,

Yes, you can count on me. Also please send me your address so that I can write you a check (let me know who do I write the check to). Email your info to jay.alnimer@dfas.mil.

Also, I have finished my database program 'Birmingham Roller Tracking and Loft Management System' and looking for a company to package it for me. If I can get the process complete before the convention, I will donate couple of copies. I am hoping.

Jay
