I have a 2007 bird that I put in the kitbox, when I let the kit fly the bird just will not leave the box, when forced out it just lands flys to the top of the house and waits for the kit to come back in. Today made the 2nd strike for this bird.
I've trying to scare him into flying with a flag, coke bottle, dog, you name it.

Now what? CULL after the 3rd strike, giving his band to the next chic hatched???

I am pretty new at this sport but, here is what has worked for me. Take the bird down the street or at least a few hundred feet from your yard. Release it after the rest of the kit is in the air. It has to at least go high enough to see where it is. It seems kind of young to give up on yet. As long as it's not bringing other birds down with it.

I have done what Janene has done and it does work. I have also placed it on the roof of the kit box and allowed it to come and go freely. Each time it trapped I got him/her out or I just closed the trap. They will start with just short little flys around the immediate area and as they gain more confidence they increase the altitude and latitude.

I have also boxed then all up and have taken them about 1/8 of a mile away and released them together. They will draw in tighter and elevate to look for home. You get the lazy or fearful to fly and the group to like kitting in one exercise. It can be repeated until you get the success you desire.

Two months old is way to early to be contemplating culling.

Just some ideas. Use what makes sense and trash what doesn't.
