Wondering the effects of using meds during breeding season, and if it causes side affects in the squabs when eating from parents?..Thanks, Jerry

I hope not Jerry, I just started treatment today with mine. Have a baby in the nest with canker and an older bird with the same thing, I think. His eyes are a little watery and it looks like hes getting a buildup in his throat. So I isolated him and dosed the whole loft. Had a lot of rain lately and the floor is a little damp. Been lazy with the ACV too. Should of known better! Hope I'm doing the right thing with the 4 in 1. Got about 8 babies at the moment and should have 4 more any day.

I have some experience. To answer your question, if you don't treat, what might happen? Bird/s get worse and die. So side of effect of doing nothing is probable death for the bird/s.

The result of properly treating a condition in time could result in the bird living. That's a good side-effect! LOL

At worst for the youngster in the nest it might get a larger dose because of its size. So what happens? Probably nothing.

One way to avoid overdosing the squabs might be to provide the meds to the bird/s in question away from the nest. Wait an hour or two. Put the parent back into the nest where there is fresh water to drink, parent drinks water and eats food and feeds the squabs.

Do this for the period of time the bird/s need to be on the medications.

You can use the 4 in 1 powder mixed with water for young birds with canker or try the 4 in 1 tablets or Spartrix tablets for really young birds that cannot drink on thier own or birds too far gone to drink on thier own.

Good luck!

Jerry,

"Medpet 4 in 1" contains Furaltadone 20% for bacteria including salmonella (paratyphoid) and e-coli, and Ronidazole (Ridzol) 7% for single-celled protozoans including Trichomonas (Canker) and Coccidia (Coccidiosis).

I used Dr. Colin Walker's excellent book "Pigeon Health Management" (that I recently purchased at the Roller-pigeon.com website store) to confirm that Ronidazole is safe for breeding pigeons, eggs, and squabs. However, it didn't mention Furaltadone. I contacted Medpet in South Africa via e-mail. Their response below indicated that their product "4 in 1" is safe for breeding pigeons, embryos, and squabs.

Dear Arlen,

I have just confirmed that the 4 in 1 Powder is safe to administer to
breeding pigeons. There should not be any risks to the embryo or squabs.

Kind regards,
Joanne van Heerden

Subject: medpet 4 in 1 powder safe for breeding pigeons?

Could you please tell me if this product is safe to administer to breeding
pigeons that are laying or feeding squabs? Are there any risks to the
embryo or squabs? Thank you. Arlen Siert

I have used meds during breeding season and it had no affect at all on the young squabs....I had a young squab that looked like it had canker....that was a couple years ago...so I treated the whole loft for canker and the everybody was just fine. So no worries....the only thing that I do not do is worm the breeders when they have squabs....worming medication is a poison...to kill the worms.....so I worm the breeders during the off season.

I do my breeders while they are sitting eggs. No risk of side effects. If one were to time it properly the chicks could get just a taste of the meds.
