As a new person on here and am hearing about all the different families of birds.
Has there been any 1 family of birds over the years that has proven itself superior and won the most competitions at the world fly? and what family would that be?
Thanks

CooCoo, I don't know for sure but my take on it is the person who has the most spare time and devotion to breeding and flying rollers has the best chance at putting up a winning kit.JMHO. ---------- Kelly

Dave, great question! I would like to expand on a little. An example I know a little more about, back in th 70's & 80's the U.K.C world hunt was won by one breed something like 20 years in a row.And in that 20 wins was one 17 or 18 times by dogs out of ONE line. Why don't we see that kind of domination in roller competition?I know there are great flyers & breeders but I don,t see where anyone family has domonated for a period of time.Or am I wrong? ---------- Ron

I can't think of a single family that dominates , but there are particular flyers that are consistantly pushing the top. That just goes to show that it is up to the breeder and what he can accomplish in the stock loft and management.

THE FAMILY WITH MOST WINS BEHIND IT IN THE LAST 15 YEARS HAS TO BE THE NORM REED BIRDS. THE NORM REED BIRDS ARE THE KEY BIRDS USED TO CREATE A LOT OF THESE WINNING FAMILIES TODAY..... NORMS BLOOD HAS MADE A FEW GREAT ROLLER MEN WHAT THEY ARE TODAY... REMEMBER WHEN IT WAS BOB SCOTT? I SURE DO..... EVERYONE WANTED BOB SCOTTS BIRDS. IM SURE THAT ALL THESE BIRDS TIE IN SOME WAY OR ANOTHER. THE MOST WANTED BLOOD IS THE 1992 - 1996 NORM REED BIRDS.....

Behind alot of the winning families ? name them !! I might add that when I judged the Calif. state fly the guy that won best ind. bird of the fly flew all Reed birds, he has a hard time holding them together though , they tend to fall apart on him.

I don't believe there is any roller family, anywhere, which is capable of noticeably shortening the odds for success. All the well known strains have been worked on over successive generations, yet none has surfaced which is so good that it overides the prowess of the manager.

I have been flying my birds for less than a year now, but the weather seems to dictate their performance the most(provided I have not overfed). I am sure some truly great kits have not scored as well because of weather conditions. I see the NBRC scores, but no mention of weather conditions or attacks by BOP. How many great family of birds have scored poorly because of this and returned the next year and done well under different conditions? Let me know if I am off base on this one. Chad

I personally believe that there are many proven families, but as most of you guys say it all depends on your management and time you spend with your birds. Just my opinion. Later

Negative Steve
it's not all luck, one of the worlds winningest race horse trainer D.Wayne Lukas (3 Kentucky derby's) once told me if you have to rely on luck George you will lose 99.9 percent of the time.
Hands down the Worlds winningest family is the Higgins family. Here are some of the wins this family has.
2002 Fall fly Walter Teal birds from R. Parker (Higgins)
2003 Fall Fly Ron Duncan birds from Parker and Higgins
1998 World Cup Robert Parker
Jerry Higgins placed in several fall flys and World Cups
Kieth London several prelim wins and local flys
Abel Ibarra several qualifies in prelims
Jose luis Lorenzo top 10 placings in World Cup.
several of the top flyers in the roller capital ( Los Angeles) of the world fly this family. and are a threat to win any major fly .
Coo Coo do yourself a favor and start with good stock thats easy to handle and you will have more fun in the Hobby.
This family you dont have to starve and believe me you will get several birds that are stock material every year you breed from this family. they love to roll and fly in your face ( low).

George,George, I think Steve hit one of the nails right on the head. With weather factors and SOB BOPs and whatever other variables out there, even with topknotch birds it can be a bit of a crapshoot. Here on the Rock all it would take is for the resident blue heron flock of 50 or so living behind my house deciding to go home for the night to throw a wrench into a fly.I'm not kidding you they fly in about 250ft as the tide comes up over the shallows. --------- Kelly

I believe the answer to the question would be the Neibel birds when they were commanded by their master. No one nor no family of birds has won the WC more than those, a streak I'm sure Heine Bijker will soon duplicate and prove his birds in his hands are every bit as much equal to the winning successes of Montys.

Brian and Scott
not many people have had success with those family's (Nieble's, Oulette ) other than Monty or Don and Wien,s.
I believe that proves that they are a difficult family to handle and train,
The Higgins/ Reed birds are like loaded pistols they go off in anybodys hands,
they are much easier to handle and fly thus giving someone with some common sence of training rollers a good chance on fly day.
Brian you know alot of the guys flying this family and you seen the results they had flying these birds some have only been flying birds a few years and they already have more Master flyer points than guys that been flying for 20 years.

So very true! You hit the nail right on the head with this post Scott! "can't think of a single family that dominates , but there are particular flyers that are consistantly pushing the top. That just goes to show that it is up to the breeder and what he can accomplish in the stock loft and management"
A great example is Joebobs success. I know he crosses Danny's birds to the Starley family. The South Carolina line to some of Ricks stuff. He has other birds as well he uses. So what do you call his birds? I personally call them a product of his superior loft management.

Hey guy's, how about Jay Starley from Utah. Jay has placed 7 times in the top ten placements from (1996 to 2006 standings in the N.B.R.C Fall flies). He holds the lead in these rankings so far.

George, re-read Dave's original question. To date, the most successful family at winning the world cup fly has been Monty's.

I'm counting on my Monty birds. The truth being the Barrett blood I have outcrossed into some of my birds is purely an experiment.I beleive I have good stock in the Monty's I've been given. Now my main task is to get past the BOP's and perfect management. It will take some years and lots of luck but I'll get there.Look out boys!!!HAH!!! ---------- Kelly
