Kel,
Sweetgum tree. You can slam those little balls on the ground and they explode seed all over the place. We had a great deal of fun doing that very thing when I was a youngster.

hey Kel,
Kenny is right. It is 10 feet from the kitbox, and the only reason I haven't cut it down is because of the shade in the summer, and as Kenny stated, they make for some fun for the kids. Those things explode and sends these little seed things everywhere.I am working on a German Shepherd pup, and when she is out there with me she bites into them, then trys like hell to get the seeds out of her mouth..Kind of funny to watch..LOL.. I have trimmed it back a ton, but it keeps on sprouting more stubs next to the main base...

My guess would be some type of Donek, or cross thereof. Nothing like I have in my loft, and I am not good at the other breeds, but that is my guess.

Ok,
Time to speak up about those birds, as they are obviously nothing that has been seen by the Birmingham Roller guys here, which is why the answer hasn't been stated.

Hi guys.

I found it interesting how Jerry does things. I like to work real close with squeaks, and get them ready early. I am big on control, so the earlier I can get them on their own the better. I think the youngsters he has posted, in the pic where they are on the floor are almost of age. some may think it is too early. What are some of the things you guys do to get them eating and trained to the kitbox? I would be interested to hear.

Howdy Milo,
I used to be one of those guys that left the young in the nest until they were old enough to basically fly out of it on their own. I found that by raising them that way that they were usually later taking to the wing after placed in the kitbox. 2 years ago I decided that I was going to get them in the kitbox sooner, on the wing sooner, and see if that made any difference as to the way they flew,performed,etc..This being my 3rd year of doing it the newer, younger way I have found personally that my birds are more mature at an earlier age. I have read on here many times about guys young birds that wouldn't get off the roof, or at best go from roof to roof..I NEVER have that problem by removing them from the nest early, and getting them to the kitbox sooner....As you stated, some may let theirs remain in the nest longer, but this is just what works for me....

Arlen,
As far as age goes, that all depends. I watch more for signs of them eating and drinking than age. I usually place them in the kitbox 2 or 3 days after I see them pecking at the food tray, and when they are placed into the kitbox, I dunk their head in the water the first minute or so they are placed in there. That usually gives them an idea on where to look for water when they get thirsty. I have had to replace a squeek now and then back onto the breeding loft floor so the parents could feed them, then back into the kitbox, but it's rare.

The picture of the squeeks lined up on here from Lil-Jess is about the right age for me. The ones above that from Washington should be trap trained and hovering above the loft by that age....Just my technics....

Milo,
I like to throw a little seed in the nest box when the chicks start standing up and pecking at me when I stick my hand in the box. When I see some pecking behavior I will put them on the floor on the breeder loft. The cock will still feed them at this point. When I see them pecking around on the floor and exploring the feeder I will move them to the foster side with the other weaners.I have 6 cockbirds who will feed 14 chicks for a while.
As they get bigger they can`t keep up and the chicks have to fend for them selves when the cockbirds finally just give up and fly back to the boxes. Looks like 17 chicks in groups of 6,10-12 days apart.
One hen laid one egg. She had laid 8 eggs, and raised a pair in 10 weeks without missing til this round. I think she`ll be just fine. I did have a 00 cockbird come up dry. First time in the breeder box. He was in the foster pen so I never checked his eggs. :)

One other thing, I whistle/rattle the can at the breeders and fosters when I feed. The chicks respond well to it when they are on the floor. They associate it to being fed within 3-4 minutes of hearing it. I watch them stand up on the nest and peep when I whistle at them.

When I move them to the foster pen I also start sitting them on the landing board of the kitbox while the kit is out. They will explore the area look thru the trap. I will set them inside the kitbox on the floor and let them explore. Put a few seeds in the tray etc. I also put a ramp up to the kitbox and release one a few feet away so he can see the other birds sitting in the doorway. Usually runs right back into the kitbox. I call this pretrap training.
By the end of the 5-7 days in on the floor in the foster pen and this training they are ready when I move them over. When they can just fly a little I will take them across the yard 10 yards or so and kinda toss him at the kitbox. Usually they get the idea and land on the kitbox.

By this time the bird has been all over the kitbox for two weeks. If he don`t get it by then he is a dummy and most likely a cull. From there I will go as far as I can in the yard and then across the fence. Usually at this point they will begin to make rounds and start flying. Couple this with a few hours a day of cage time every day and a little feed control,
I seldom lose a bird.

Milo,
I put the squeaks in the kitbox at 3 weeks on the dot and they won't eat for a day or so but they figure it out pretty quick. If there aren't any young in there already eating I'll put an old hen in there for a couple of days to teach them.Their growth slows down a bit at first but by the end of the first week they are putting on weight pretty good.
