I was thinking about making some feed trays for my kit boxes, what size are they normally? Do the kit birds get spooked when you take the trays out? All info is greatly appreciated.

A normal size is any size that works for the number of birds you are feeding. I use one that is 12" wide and 16" long, feeds 20 birds without to much mishap.I have also used a metal feeder typically used for poultry, long and slender with good success. Usually after they eat they will drink and then fly up to their perch. That is when you reach in and retreive the tray..No spooking..

I build mine out of 1x6 about 30 inches long. Feeds 22 with no problem. "I" beam with a band around it. Give them two inches to stick thier heads in and eat. Close in the ends for stability.

mines are 24 x 24 they are perfect, mines are like sheet metal, the same trays that come with a rabbit hutch when you buy it, i prefer these ones over the wood ones..

Kim,
Those are like the ones I built but mine have a top and the center is a little shorter. Your right, thirty minutes and a few pieces of scrap and VOILA you have a feeder.

I use 30 X 30 and don't like more than twenty birds on that size , plus I stand over it while they are feeding making sure that the feed stays evenly spread , this also keeps your birds used to being handled which is important so that you can gauge condition.
No they don't get spooked at all

I do like Scott does, I watch my birds eat most of the time. I'm always handling them. I can reach in with one hand and most birds will let me feel there crops with out moving from there box pearch. But I like picking them up and getting a good feel.I've had some small typy hens that are rolling well, feel a little lighter than the pushy cocks. Then some of the hens arn't as pushy when eating. I'll give them there share seperate.
