Here in Oklahoma, it is windy all spring and most of the fall. I'm training my yb kit right now. I don't worry about a breeze, but I will be lucky to fly once a week if I don't fly in the wind. What problems will i likely face? Most of them are just coming into the roll right now. I've been flying them when its 5-15 mph and their hitting alot of action when they turn into it but if it is like last year, it was 20-35 most of the spring. I will keep them down when its real bad but what problems are the moderate winds?

It often depends on the family. The characteristically high strung families which are more prone to fast flying will take full advantage of it. You increase the likelihood that they won't develop the instinct to fly with a slower wing beat which aids in increased concert performance. From my experience wind flying teaches the birds too many bad habits, like flying through breaks, failure to learn a team cadence, swooping around in circles, and often the failure to get condition to clean rolling. Wind flown birds often show resistance to the roll, even during the roll.
The problem you face is you really have no choice so I'd say it is better to keep them in on the more intense wind days and take advantage of the calmer ones. I'd rather have kits that weren't flown as much and weren't so prone to develop bad habits rather than have kits that were nothing but a flock of fast flying racing homers with scattered performance.
I hate wind!!!

Val,
Sometimes flying in the wind can scare the Shit out a person, you know,,when they disappear over the tops of the trees(something they NEVER do normally)and don't reappear for 5 or ten minutes.Standing there cursing yourself for being so stupid to fly on such a day.Try driving down the road,,nope can't see'em they're ghandi.Come home kick yerself some more.Go in the house, cry to the missus, pour a stiff one,go outside tail between legs HAH!!!! There they ARE!!Kitting above the house flying strong against the wind not rolling worth a damn but hey,,,,they're back.Phwew,
Yits,

Val,
The wind just sux bro. I don`t put mine up over 20. Just fly them anyway. Nothing we can do about it in this part of the country but deal with it. Of you don`t fly in the wind, whatcha gonna do when it is windy on fly day and your birds don`t know what to do but to run with it?
My birds develop their own style with the wind. They learn how to use it to thier advantage for the most part.
Good Luck

Wow! They were horrible tonight, the wind was a little harder than usual.More in the 15-20 range.

Brian, everything you mentioned, happened tonight.Flying to fast, they would turn into the wind and instead of rolling, they would all break together and fly like jets with the wind. Instead of rolling, they just flipped alot.

Kelly, I think I experienced all the emotions you were talking about tonight! Hell, they kept disapearing for long periods of time. Everytime I thought they were gone, here they would come. Worse, I had a cooperhung around for about ten min waiting on one to have dinner. They didn't come in till almost complete darkness.

Both you guys were right on the money with your assesements!

I want to stick with Kenny though. Most of these birds aren't out of my best stock. Hell if I don't fly in the wind, I won't get to fly much in the spring. I live to fly my birds! I won't waist my good stock in the wind, but their just starting to lay. Maybe this was just an off night, they been doing pretty well on these breezy evenings.

I keep thinking, since the WC is in the spring, its likely gonna be windy and I'm gonna participate, hopefully next year! I'm gonna try to jump in the FF this year, just to get my feet wet. Ahrrrrrr, decisions decisions!

Better they come in at dark than earlier and feed that darn Coop.If you have wind steady like that you'll just have to fly em in it I guess and hope for the best.A calm day with no preds would be heaven for me right now.Like Kenny says tho',over 20mph and I'd keep em in.Those heavier gusts are what'll take em away, especially the young'ns----------
