Yesterday afternoon I lost another bird to a hawk. I have only 4 decent spinners left after a devastating overfly brought on by hawks and weather. One of those 4 decent birds is one that the hawk took. What is even worse is this one was a breeder that I put back into the kitbox, so the lose was doubley painful.
The event occurred right in my back yard. The kit was returning from a fly and where flying low and then from out of no-where the hawk struck. The hawk brought the bird down to the ground to inspect it and finish the kill. I got up and rushed towards it hopes of saving the bird and chasing away the hawk. The hawk seen me coming and picked up the fately injured bird and flew off and out of sight.
It angered me. I began to contemplate ways of revenge for the dastardly deed. I thought about flying exploding kites; buying a .17 cal. rifle and hunting them down where they live; shooting them out of the sky with a shotgun even risking a fine for discharging a firearm in city limits; buying a trap and when caught sticking a firecracker in its ass then lighting it. All of these things went quickly through my sain, but cloaded mind.
How dare they (the hawks) infrienge upon the sanctidy of my birds; my property; my family. How dare they intrude into my private environment; an environment that they are not welcomed in. Those hawks are all alike; they are all no good; they are bad. They destroy nature; they disrupt what is natural.
Then the cloud of anger lifted and my mind automatically regained its balance. I realized the only thing un-natural about this event was the fact that I had a stained red wooden box of birds that I on a schedule forced the box of birds to become airborne. The only thing really natural was a hawk taking a bird; one bird for its daily meal and possibly feeding it young with its take.
Things could be worse; yes you heard me - worse. What could be worse is not to have any hawks at all. Another dead space in the natural nature.
I hate them bastards! Don't you?
Wierd ain't it?

When you say you hate them bastards, are you referring to the hawks or the government for not allowing to protect our own property? I feel your pain, they always seem to get the best ones. I believe hawks play an important roll in this world, but when they take up residense in our neihborhoods and start fiesting off our property, we should be allowed to protect what is ours. Were not going to hurt the population of the BOPs. If the naturalust saw how the BOPs killed, slow torturous deaths, ripping your defenseless living bird, limb from limb, I think they would understand why we feel the way we do!
Sorry, just venting a little today. Waist of time, nobody will listen! I'm gonna go feed the hawks now!LOL

I had 13 young took one year by the hawk i couldnt breed them fast enough it was sure a bummer season for me as i only breed 30 birds per year. hope you have better luck in the future Nick. regards W@yne uk

My personal policy is.....NEVER put a proven breeder back ito the kitbox.....unless you don't really care if it gets taken......because, for sure, it will.... YITS, Cliff

You guys speak of balance. You are experiencing these attack because the government will not remove them from the endangered list and let you TCB. There are a lot more now than there were before the ban on killing them due to the DDT. Speak of balance to your congressman and representative.
I don`t know the public fascination with BOP`s anyway. It`s not like they are cute and fuzzy. Actually they are a mean haughty bird who ravage the songbirds and pigeons who give us birdy music. ---------- V99 Flippin`The Bird!

Val, Super happy to hear you had a good fly pred free.I'm sure chompin' at the bit to fly my birds soon.Haven't seen a BOP for 3 days now,and the redwinged blackbirds are nesting in the hedges so some good sign here there will be clear skies coming up. Don't know about convincing the powers that be to change the laws protecting BOPs.Kinda like barking up a dead horses culu is the reaction I think we'd get.Up here we have Harbour Seals going up the mouths of the rivers chasing the salmon and you should hear the uproar whenever there is talk of a cull. They all want to be able to have salmon on their plate tho. ---------- Kelly

Good one Kenny , yes the havoc goes far beyond our little pigeons. Last week I flew while a front was moving through and the day after , down 5 ,one being a stock hen that I had just moved back out to try and cond. for the A team. then last weekend had one of my local RedTails snatched a youngster out of the air on it's second flight , now that is a major problem as we have gotten along for a good number of years and thier daytime perch is on an Elect tower on a hill diectly behind the loft , as it is anything that hits or lands in a tree is thiers, I just consider them the tax collector as I have seen them chase off much worse than themselfs. I'm not seeing the Vole's yet as that is thier major food source , and last year thier population was way way down. It is allways something but all we can do is keep plugging along. Scott
