This hen was really nice in the air. She rolled a good 25' fast and frequent. The red below is her grand mother. She is a 1996 hen that is still laying every 14 days or so. The old girl has bred many a fine spinner and nearly as many good stock birds.

Spinner Jim. I don't think Kennys birds have magpie related to them Lol. The markings in true birmingham rollers can be various throughout the pigeon. Ron Adams from birmingham experimented with magpies back in the 70s and 80s. Magpies do roll but usually on the very short side and very frequent. But occasionally i believe you do get the odd roll down. I have never seen magpies fly in reality Jim but would love to. Also i have a dvd that i can send you if you want it showing Ron Adams flying Magpie pigeons back in the 80s. email me Jim if you want a copy. Regards W@YNE UK

LMAO.....I don't think KGB has any birds with "magpie" blood in them. I would bet they are very close to being pure Birminghams.

Hey Jerry, LMAO, Magies, I don't think so!! LOL That little patch cock is not from my stock but from the Monty Nieble birds I got back in 2000 after Monty's death. The original pair has thrown 4 birds marked like this one. The other red check was a hen that Jay Starley picked from the air as a good one on a visit for the WC prelim a few years ago. If Mont had Magies in his birds, then I guess it could be. I truly doubt it.. KGB

Kenny,
My understanding was that your family of rollers was developed long ago and that you are strict at keeping your roller family without any mix of other rollers from different breeders. What I am reading and gathering from your post is that you take good birds from good friends and breed them with your stock. Do you just breed best to best from different stock birds or you breed best to best from your own inbred family. In the past we had a thread that was debated which way is the best way to breed; best to best or inbreeding/linebreeding of one’s own rollers. Just wondering…Thanks.

So if 583 is such a prolific layer, how does one go about aquiring a pair of birds off her? LOL Out of curiosity Kenny, who do you have her on right now?

Jay, No, I keep my main family tight.. I have a small line of Monty Nieble birds that I breed in a total separate loft. I do and have tried crosses, but never in my main loft of breeders. Always on the side in an individual. The Monty birds do make some nice rollers when crossed on my own birds, but they are just battle crosses. If I did anything with them, it would be start a whole new family, but I have not reason to pursue this. Maybe when I retire and all I have to do is play roller. My pure family will remain pure as long as I own them,, There is no replacing good seed stock, nothing like a family of rollers that have been kept in a family, You can always out cross and cross families'. You cannot always find birds you can line and inbreed and hold good. Seed stock means a tight family that can handle being tightly bred. Any bird that can be inbred and make good rollers, can always be out crossed to make good rollers, Not true the other way around. Most birds have to be continually out crossed and corrective bred. The gene pool in most rollers are so messed up from corrective breeding, and poor breeding choices, that the first steps of inbreeding uncovers so much crap, the fancier blames inbreeding and starts the vicious circle of chasing crossing to keep things covered up. Probably didn't answer you question, but oh well. LOL KGB

Some day I'll be as proficient as you gentlemen on this puter. Took me three days to get the browser reset to get logged on here. Magpies were mentioned reference Kenny's Monte cock. The maggies from England were actually/still are/the result of the pencil genotype. The cock Kenny posted is simply pied marked which is very common in many roller families. Gregg.

I don't think Monty dabbled with the pencil(LMAO). I heard his birds were nearly pure Pensoms. I know that you newer guys hate to hear that name come up all of the time, but when you get right down to it, it is still Pensom birds that are in the bloodlines of most kits who are kicking your asses. He ain't going away! Get over it!

Nick, You got that part right. Even the ones that had the feuds with Pensom and didn't acknowledge him, had birds from him. They just denied it. A lot of that same type of crap still goes on with guys claiming they didn't out cross to some one else's family of rollers, etc. If you follow the Jac's, the Rottenbacher's, etc all the way back, they came from Pensom or birds that came over under his influence. Gregg.

Hi Jerry, I can't get anything passed you Jerry. Of all the guys on this list, You are for sure the sharpest marble in the bag! LOL Let us reason together Jerry. I call this cock Narley Head, Hmmmmmm now why would that be? Could it be that Narley Head and messed up feathers on the back top of the head? Hmmmmmm I'm just not sure. You know, if Stan has pure Pensom's, I know how he got the crest on them,, He scalps them when they are young so the feathers don't grow back right and calls them crested. LOL This old cock is a 1996 cock that was scalped and I thought blinded as a young bird. I brought him in the house and hand raised him. If you look close you can see the skin around the eyes is still a little stretched, but not bad. He healed well and has been a great producer. I would have to kill my whole loft if he was a crest Jerry. LOL Only not kidding.. KGB
