Damp feed is the root of my old canker problems! Changed my feeding methods and started using apple cider vinager in the water and it seems to have solved the problem! If any feed gets damp, I clean it up and get rid of it. If you have cracked corn in your feed, that seemed to be my worst enemy when I was younger. I have also used fish zole and 4 in 1 to get rid of it but apple cider vinager, 2 tbsp for a gallon of water, is cheeper and is working for me. Hope this helps!

To much safflower in the feed also causes canker in squabs.Although good for the high protein contained it is bad when given in excess,so take care to not give them to much.

I feed the 19 percent with pop corn, usually i experience that the cracked corn can cause it like Electric man said but not sure about the popcorn, do you guys think that popcorn can cause it? i know corn aint good for them makes them hot or something like that, my feed are in air tight containers so i think that its not cause it damp, i do sometimes give them a hand full of safflower too but not sure what it is....

Chor,
Causes can be of many things including:
1. EMOTIONAL STRESS or PSYCHIC STRESS is the number one cause of canker. 2. Nutritional deficiencies: deficient in Vitamin B1, B2, B6, B12 and C. 3. Allergies and sensitivities to certain feed or cereal grains such as buckwheat, wheat, barley, oats and rye, and the gluten protein found in grains. 4. Hormonal change, around breeding season. 5. Genetics, carried from generation to generation.

Pigeon canker is Trichomoniasis which is a protazoan organism that lives in most pigeons. Stress is generally what brings it out, along with warm, moist weather and loft conditions. Antiprotozoal drugs work well to combat canker. Treating a flock say before breeding season doesn't guarantee that some offspring won't show signs of developing canker. It is easy to control as long as you have the proper medications on hand to administer when you find it in your birds.

Also, keep in mind that if you have identified it, make sure to treat it immediately. There is a point of no return if a bird or a number of birds are showing signs. If you are unlucky enough to get the "wild" type found in many commies, it can wipe out your entire loft.

Thankfully, I haven't had one case of it this year! (Knock on wood)
Last year, I had some problems during the rainy season and I had little or no luck at all with fish zole! I would give 1/2 a tablet and usually come back to find a dead baby! I wasn't impressed with it!
If I have problems again, I will probably try spartix next!JMO ---------- Val

spartix is one of the most effective drug is usually effective with a single dose. It is essential that the fancier prevents re-infection by practicing proper sanitation and husbandry.the carriers of this illness is not easily properly identify which can be the parents, you would know this when the squabs are born with this illness but you would have to isolate the birds quickly. ---------- Ralph

Hey Val....
How are those work-outs going?
A good thing to do is bike-riding! I ride my mountain bike all the time.
NOTE: It get's the cardio going, strengthens the legs and helps to loosen up the intestinal tract so that feces can be defecated more efficiently.
A good bike I would recommend is the 2008 Motobecane 400 HT Mountain Bike

Ralph, it made a big difference when I closed up the west side of my loft and it keeps almost all of the moisture out! Now I have bricked the floors and they don't touch dirt anymore! Also, I give a lot of credit to the ACV that I add to the water! Not one sick youngster this year! Yet! Fixin to break them up too!
Marcus, lifting 4-5 times a week and been running every night! 1 1/2 to 2 miles every night since June 1st! Down 10 lbs already! Seeing my pics of me in the futurity fly was an eye opener! Fixin to go run now!
I drink ACV myself and take 2-3 fish oil pills a day,no problem with the plumbing! LOL
On top of that, I take garlic, a multi vit, and drink 2 protien drinks a day! Trying to get serious again!
Can't afford a bike right now, still paying off my lawyer bills! I am planning on getting one though, that is a nice one! Thanks! ---------- Val
