Hey Cliff, in response to your blog post, here are some of my thoughts...my suggestion is to solicit help from those with more than just birds to lose, but those who stand to lose: MONEY!

While I am new to the pigeon product supply business and a very very small player, I would hate to lose customers, not for bad service, but because they were told they could not have them anymore.

Companies like Foys, Jedds, New England Pigeon Supply and the rest, stand to lose alot of potential revenue if their customers start to go down city by city to unjust laws and unfair regulations.

Why not raise money from these companies and guys who sell pigeons (for example Ruby Rollers) and hire a part or full time lobbyist to counter the claims and offer to donate to congress persons willing to back us up?

Perhaps Roller-Pigeon.Com or some other organization could start a new nationwide roller club with a portion of membership dues to go to a fund to pay for such a lobbyist?

Perhaps local club members could create a voter block supporting local candidate for city council who support the right to raise pigeons and would vote for such laws or at least oppose laws to restrict them.

Just some thoughts...

All great ideas, Tony.......As I said in the article, we have tremendous resources within the hobby. We just need to harness and direct them, appropriately. Paul Fullerton is very interested in this project and had even volunteered to chair a committee for this purpose. Let's see how some others feel....

Is it a total out and out ban on pigeon keeping? Or is it some restrictive measures set forth for the care of the birds and regulations governing facilities, etc, etc.

Cliff,

Maybe you can post a couple of the e-mails that I sent to Bob B. On the subject....and some of the ideas that I threw around. Anyway...see if you can post them...and lets see what other people feel about the issue. I really hope that people...don't do the "normal" thing and just say..Sucks to be them...or unless it is happening in your own back yard..you turn the other cheek....if we do not take this by the horns and be pro-active....then I see a future of big fighting on our hands and losing one of the longest running hobbies in the world..

Over here in the UK, I doubt the Government would contemplate banning pigeons. There was uproar when the Mayor of London stopped the feed sellers from operating in Trafalgar Square and then brought in a falcon to keep pigeon numbers down yet further. It's true that some consider pigeons as messy, flying rats, but the majority of people do seem to like having them around. All over Europe, into the Middle East, pigeons and pigeon-keepers have existed for centuries.

The hobby is so universal that I can't see your average government having the political balls to upset so many pigeon fanciers - after all, they depend on them for votes. I would have thought that only if there's a clear majority of voters who are kicking up a stink, saying they want an outright ban, that a government would chance its arm. Is that what's happening in the US?

In the UK, the racing pigeon fraternity has quite a voice. They kicked up a right stink when races were curtailed due to the threat of bird flu. Even thought we've now had a genuine outbreak of the deadly H5N1 disease, the ban on pigeon racing has now been lifted.

Hey, even the Queen has racing pigeons. So, if anyone suggested a ban on pigeon keeping, I suspect it would be "Orf with their heads!"

Will the NBRC members be willing to contribute $15 or more to a fund when they renew their subscription in Nov.?

Will the NBRC committee contact other pigeon organizations and ask their members to contribute to the fund?

Education alone will not do it. There are allot of ignorant people around including politicians.

We can talk all we want but can we back our talks with actions. I am game.

Jay,
The NBRC, apparently, is unwilling to committ funds to this effort at this time and equally reluctant to get involved with any effort, as an organization, to contact other clubs about the issue. At this point in time they have chosen to focus their efforts on other issues......unfortunatley.

Aren't the "other" clubs members, members of the NBRC? I do believe most are. I would say, as some have stated, that a seperate identity needs to be made to deal with such non-sense in the pigeon world..Pigeons of any breed.

Jerry,
I'm thinking Jay is meaning clubs like the AU, show breed clubs, doves etc. who are not probably not NBRC members. But I think you are right about one thing, though. A single committee representing and supported by pigeon-breeders in all the organizations could certainly make a difference.
