Jerry, I know your getting the same cold spell that were getting right now. Been below frrezing the last two nights and I have little ones at that stage where the parents aren't setting on them much, and they just have their pins. So I've been keeping hand warmers under them. The kind you open and shake for a few min and they get warm. I put about one in. of hay between the babies and the warmer so they aren't roasted sqab in the mornings! Tonight is supposed to be 24 degrees and tomorrow night isn't gonna be much better! Sorry for not posting sooner, but I just noticed your post about frozen babies. Just trying to help, probably too late! Theres always next winter though!LOL

Hey Jerry,

Sorry to hear about your babies freezing. I lost 1 last night to the cold, so tonight I gathered the rest up in a box and brought them in the house. In the morning I will take them back out to their parents..

It can't hurt!!!

Thanks Val and robby,
The babies I lost were 2 days old. I have a few others that are from 3 to 7 days old and they are doing good in the 18 degree nights.
The cock of these babies that died has not set on the nest or eggs, AT ALL!..I watched him the entire egg setting process, and he would push the hen off the nest, then chase her around. I didnt have much hope that they would even hatch....
Being in a pissy mood yesterday, I decided to pull his ass out of the loft and put him in the kitbox to refly. I have bred this cock for 2 years now and he has been the best parent I have..kinda weird..
I had that pepperhead cock that I pointed out to ya Robby, that lost his mate, so I am going to pair them up as they are close in type,look,etc....
If their young dont work to the caliber of the original pair, then I will pull him back out of the kit after the comp. flys and see if he has straightened out....
Again, thanks guys!

Hey Jerry, sorry to here you lost those youngsters. All I did was turn on the heaters and my stock birds and young ones are enjoying 80 degrees temps while it is below freezing outside.

Heaters were one of the best ideas for my breeding loft I could have come up with. My first winter out here I lost several squabs due to the cold and I have a propane powered heater if the power goes out!!

I have a wall mount heater you can borrow until the cold spell passes if you want. Brand new and still in the box. was going to install it in time for next winter but seems its already here!!!

Good Luck!

As for myself, loosing the few youngsters that hatched and not having eggs hatch at all. I think the main reason was the cold weather. Even having them in a separate building that was attached to my house was still not the answer. I think that in Ohio were I live, it is too early to put pairs together in December. I had plenty of eggs laid, but because of the cold weather they were not sat on at all. I have collected about 50 eggs that were left unattended,a few days of being laid and then were abanded. So, by March I separated them until the beginning of April. And now all the pairs are back setting on eggs. But,the weather is much warmer then in the past 4 months.Maybe we put our birds together way too soon. And as like Tony, Iam in the process of building a brand new loft at my new house that will have a HEATED breeding room. Good luck this year to everyone Paul

Thanks for the generous offer Tony, but hopefully that wont be necessary if the weather warms up this week.

I kept my loft heated all winter and had no problems. BUT, I pulled down the plastic that I had covering my avery and therefore the cold just comes right in..I have re-enclosed it until the temps rise again....hopefully soon!...

Again, Thanks....See ya this saturday I believe..
