About a year ago (March 8, 2006) Mr. JX posted a topic on perches affecting kitting. In that topic Mount Airy Lofts suggested using long boards across the kit box at staggered heights and posted pictures. I was wondering if anyone was inspired to try them and if they worked. I am building some kit boxes and thought they might make easy, cheap, and effective perches. I am a bit worried about wars breaking out though.
Also right now I am using a walk in loft with attached aviary to fly my kits out of. It is tricky getting inside to feed without letting birds out accidentally. I am worried the situation will be worse with traditional kitboxes especially during lock downs. How do you get the feed pans in, feed, clean, etc. in such a small space with birds that I assume are ready to bust out?

Hey JB, I like the box perches. You can get the most birds on a wall that way. As far as feeding the birds in the small kitboxes,if I'm whistling and talking when I open the door those birds are definately not going to fly out. They know they are going to be fed,but I've only had the odd one fly out if I'm scraping the box out and they are inside. When I fly them there are sure signals it is time to go out and hit the sky.First the trap is opened then the door with a red flag stuck in there to make sure they al come out.Without those signals especially the flag, they don't usually escape. ---------- Kelly

If you let the birds hnow you are approaching the kit box they shouldn't be startled when you open the door. C.J.

I use V-Perches. Seems to help keep my birds a lot cleaner using them.
