Hey guys, I re-placed a cock that i have been breeding from for 2 years now back into the kitbox. I gave him the retrap update, and have flown him 3 times now. This is the first time I have taken a bird out of the loft and put back into the air, so I am lost here..I have watched this bird from release to retrap now, and have not seen him do a single flip..Before stocking, this was the best that I raised that year (05) and he was a solid bird.... My question is to those that have put birds back into the air, is there a time frame I should be looking at before his performance comes back, or?
His offspring have been good birds...Thanks

Well you should give him some time to get adjusted to flying after two years of being fat and lazy and no flying. U know if we took two years off and all we did is mate :) , eat , ... we would have hard time running. LOL Just my opinion.

Jerry, yesterday I yanked a cock bird that was a Great roller out of the stock loft and put him in the A team cock kit. He hasn't flown in two years at least. He never bred anything that made the A team so because his performance was so awesome, I figured I would put his ass back to work. He weighed as much as a homer when I put him the box. Today I kicked that kit out and I was kinda surprised he flew with the kit. I had to look through the birds, thinking no way, he must have rolled down somewhere, but there he was. After about five minutes his fat ass couldn't hang with flying no more so he came down. Never saw him do anything but fly, and he was one of the hotter controlled birds I was flying back then. He was a good 40 footer, fast and balled up. (wish he would have bred the same). I know that it will take me about seven or eight flys to take the weight off and see him roll again.

Norms dead right some birds take longer to adjust than others give the bird more time , let the bird burn the access fat off and the bird will soon be ripping them rolls out, Don't try to knock the food down too quick Regards W@yne uk ---------- Patience Perseverance Perfection =====================================

Thanks Brian, you described my bird exactly..His first flight was 10 mins, then the past 2 flights he stayed up about 20 to 25, while the others flew 40..He is fat as heck, but I did cut his feed back as much as the other kitbirds a few days ago..I am hoping he comes around before the W/C....I was surprised how well he kitted tho. Thanks wayne for the input. ----------

Jerry, when do you fly the WC?The reason I ask is becuzz it might be too close if your trying to get him in shape and also get your team ready,You want them to all be on the same page.So it might hurt you instead of help you.JMO

R.O, Without going outside in the rain and getting the flyer out of the truck, I am 99% sure that I fly at 1:00pm on the 7th of May.
My thought is that if he is not back to his old self by fly date, or a few days before, I will pull him out for the fly. I have mostly Y/B's, but will have 6 or 7 that have the goods flying...Just trying to get my feet wet here.

If you put some good air time under his wings he "should" get into shape pretty quick. One thing to consider and something that has been discussed before is that sometimes some once good kit performers that showed no resistance to the kit or the roll, take on a whole new mentality after a few years of breeding. I've been surprised by this a few times. I've had a few that just seemed to not have the heart they once had, even after a solid month or two of flying. It was liked they were spoiled and couldn't get over it..lol.

Jerry, Here again its and individual and genetic thing. I hate to repeat over and over again but some familys of birds can be bred from for a couple of seasons and be placed back into the kit box and never miss a beat. I remember a Hans Roettenbacher tort cock I had bred by Hans that I flew and than stocked and than put back up in the air after a couple of breeding seasons and he went right back to work after a couple of weeks of air time like he hadn't been pulled from the kit. I'm sure yours will show you the same goods once he get in fit shape and than you can tweak him to get the roll out of him. The guys in the early years use to purge thier birds to get them back to rolling form when they went flat on them. They did this by the use of Epsom Salts and buttered toast. This was accomplished by holding thier water after thier normal feeding and hitting them with luke warm water of Epsom salts and than crumbling up hard buttered toast and feeding them this adn flying them the next day. Joe Hein was noted for purging his stock. Bill Schrieber of Portland still to this day purges his kits when needed. Hang in thier Jerry he will come back to form and make you where that smile LOL!! Hey by the way I'm a water Fanatic to. Wake boarding,Water Skiing and barefoot skiing. Did you hit the lakes when living in Southern California? Gotta a guy up here in Seattle Washington that held the Junior record back in the 70's for water skiing jumps. He raises rollers and is in my region his name is Ken Westlund. Ivan

Thanks Ivan, before the attacks today, he did manage to get a few 5 to 10 footers together...He surprises me how well he is kitting tho....
Yea, we spent many hours on the water at Perris Lake, and at the Colorado River. My son is doing pretty well at wakeboarding..He has got his back roll "flip" down,he gets HUGE air, and does a sweet back side 180..Kinda fun to watch him.
Now me on the other hand...LOL
