With the problems we face each year from hawk and falcons, should we stock them before the two year mark?

After locking down your birds for six months out of the year, would the second season be too early?

well if they are a year old and have been locked up for 6 months of that 12 months, it's a gamble if you don't knwo the birds very well, it alwasy is.
You could breed from them while they are locked up then refly them, then at least you would have something from them should you loose them. This system works.
I would get a couple of rounds out of them using lights out in the loft to trick them into breeding and also covering up vents with clear plastic to keep things a bit warmer.
Then you would be working some of them and then reflying them.

Rollerman,
Lets say you started breeding in February and you got your young birds out in April. You where able to fly those birds without much problem Intel October or November. Now your getting your ass kicked by every BOP you can think of and your loosing your best spinners so you need to shut down. Now your looking at your breeding loft and deciding what you need to breed out of for the next year. You know that you have some good birds in your kit box but they have been flown for only one year. You also know that if you let these birds back out they will be lunch for Mr Cooper or who knows what else. So, do you loose a year by feeding your best spinners to Mr Cooper or do you try and breed out of some of those good spinners instead to see if they will produce what you are seeing from them in the air. Its up to the breeder.
Don't loose a whole year to the BOP.

Good Luck And keep the good ones.

I agree with Dave. What I do is if I have a few exceptional young birds after the Fall Fly I will breed from them over the Winter and put them back out to fly in the Spring. If they are still around after the next Fall Fly and I need them for stock I then stock them forever.
On the other hand when I needed Breeders bad I have pulled good rollers at 6 month old and bred from them. The main thing is to fly the young hard and keep picking the best untill you are able to replace them with something better. After you have your stock built up you can gamble longer flying them.
I have always been told to never fly anything I can't afford to lose.LOL. David

When I first started out, all I heard was fly your kit birds for two years minimum. The last few years I’ve been seeing a lot more BOP, which made me wonder about that rule. You got to get them before they (BOP) do. Thank you, very good advice guys

Roller 132, if it the best you have ever bred at your loft I would defently give them a shot, and if it is a bird that you think you really need in your program, get them before the BOP does...lol

I am going to give you a firm "maybe". I don't feel a bird can prove him/her self until it has got two full seasons of flying in BUT, if your BOP problem is hugh and you have this one bird that has really cought your eye not only in its performance (tangible) but, shows all the good character traits (intangible) then you might chance it. Maybe one or two rounds only and then set him or her aside and see if the offspring are worthy.

Actually, you can do whatever you desire. It is only YOU that YOU have to please. I just don't have the time and space to risk it, myself.
