Today a pair of eggs were due to hatch,the first one was ok,out popped the chick but half of the egg shell went over the other egg and the poor chick died trying to peck through two shells,its the first time thats happened to me in all the years i have had rollers,have any of you guys experienced a similar thing ?? jim uk. ps I dont know what scenario means ,lol.

Yes Jim I have ,If I catch them just hatching I always remove the shells do to this if they are still in the nest, I had this earlier this year but caught it time.

I also do as Scott, and remove the egg shells as they hatch. I have never had the double shell thing, but it does happen.

i always discard the egg shell if i can catch it egg shell that is lol

Hey Guys, When discarding the eggshells crumble them up and put them back in your grit feeder. The birds love the stuff. I know of a fancier that mixes chicken egg shells into his grit and never has a problem with calcium defeciency. The birds love the stuff. Try it and see. Ivan

Most of my breeder pairs throw the shells out right after the chicks hatch. It is my notification of new arrivals.

Speaking of egg hatches, How do you guys deal with birds getting stuck in the egg and dying ? Do you help them out of there shell or have you found this only creates a weak bird that dies anyway ?
