That one is both tough and easy to answer. By and large, barring any outside influences that change their flight speed behavior such as routine predator attacks, it is a combination of family traits, feeding and state of mind. Some families are more inclined to fly slow most of the time, regardless of how they are fed. As they get older feed becomes important to set their speed to how you want it for a particular fly.

At 3 monthes old they will do all kinds of crazy things. Brian is correct in saying alot of factors contribute to the kit flying fast or slow bot for now I would just fly them and let them get some more time in the air. You might be surprised at the difference in another 6 monthes or so. Joe

I think Brian and Joe both gave you some answers to your questions as it is something you really will need to select for from your line of birds, if you elect to keep with them? The more lines you have the more eratic your kit will be on the whole unless you fly different families in their own kits, which is a big pain in the butt.

I think that mannerisms in the birds is a lot of this so a lot is genetic, but you can manipulate this somewhat thru selection depending how set this trait is in the genepool you have.

With my birds I find that if I feed them a lot of wheat they will fly faster but with milo they are very manable in terms of having a feed that is made up of mostly milo. I use a mixed grain that is probably about 12-13% protein all year long and this works great for them. I don't like to feed popcorn either as I have discovered that popcorn will cause them to fly high.

Feeding and genetics thru selection is the best ways to get them to do what you want them to become. There is no short cuts so you will have to put in the time to get the rewards.

You will not get a slow wing beat or a slow flying pigeon from a bird that is out of condition ie over weight thats for sure.
To get a pigeon flying slowly it must be in flying condition and feeding will have to be just right.
Every family of birds are diffrent so its up to you as a flyer to get your birds in flying condition to competition condition.
Its all about playing with feeds and getting to know your family how they react to diffrent feeds to get the best from your birds.
Main staple diet of wheat works for me but im not saying it ill work for you.
Observe and learn from watching your birds reaction to feeds and diet.
Hope this helps
