Mixed a little millet in with the feed, fed my usual cup and a half last night. Let my kit go up at 7 p.m. and their still up! Its dark as hell, but I thought i heard a wing pop so I set out a couple of lights and two came down. I can still see the ones with white in them once in a while. Their up there but I think their scared of the lights. This over fly stuff sucks! Just getting them to come into the roll and they pull this crap! Scares ythe hell out of ya! I think that I will get them back but its 9:30 now and they are still full of energy from the millet or their scared of the lights. Definatly gonna jot this little inscadent down and no more millet for my kit birds. This sucks!!!!!

val,

Don't worry...they should be home in the morning....Shine the lights on the kit box and loft........if they do not return...they will land near by....and be back in the morning..the same thing happened to me and I got every bird back....when I woke up at the crack...they were all in and on top of the kit box. That is not a true overfly....that is just getting caught with your pants down...

little advice...whenever you try something new...do it in the morning fly...

I hear that! 5 landed under the lights. Still have 15 MIA . Didn't think that a little feed change would make that big a differance. There can't be more than a tbl spoon of millet in the whole cup& 1/2 of feed! Wow, could be a costly mistake. I think a lot of them will be back! 1 is still circling 3 hrs and 45 mins later but the rest have disappeared. Amazing, luckily there is no wind, hope it stays that way through the night! Its like not knowing were your kids are at and its after kerfew!(sp) Just called my buddy tonight bragging on how they were coming along! Won't do that again either! LOL

Man, this sucks! Sure could use a group hug right now! Hee hee!

Lesson #1, don't under any circumstances jack with the feed too much in the spring unless you are flying them in the morning, and even then, say a prayer...lol.

Millet is nasty man. Its a sure way to have an overfly if not fed correctly. Hope they all come back man, and also that U dont have owls.

Thanks for the info Val.

Paul... owls you say? I've had several kit birds stay out all night with only a few returning in the a.m.

I think owls just might be the culprit. This is why I hate flying kits after 6:30 p.m.

8 are still MIA this morning! Everytime I let them out earlier, I get hit by sharks. Haven't seen one in two weeks, I may try it a couple of hrs earlier next week. I work 4 night shifts starting tonight. Going to cut their feed back a little more. They been flying about an hr to an hr and fifteen min on what I was feeding. They still arent a full 6 mo. old yet. But I need more control yet! I only give them 50/50 milo and wheat, which should I cut back on at this age, or should I?

The night lights will be up for sure by the time change in the fall. I can see where their gonna be benificial! If anyone can show a picture of their night light system, it would he kool!

Usually when you change feed, it takes about 4 to 5 days to see the effect. I really don’t think it is the Millet that is causing them to sky out and for long. I think it is the early spring parametic pressure that is causing the birds to act that way. This time of year I truly believe that feeding the birds more peas will cut down on flying high and long since the peas contain allot of protein but the draw back is they will fly faster a bit.

you can try turning the lights on more often in the evening especially if you`re gonna fly them late in the day. Even if its not dark yet, so they are used to them. The coolest thing I seen is the red or yellow strobe lights like the plow or wrecker trucks use. Richard Miller in Ohio had them set up for his lofts and he said he turned them on a lot so the birds were used to it. If they stayed up too long they knew where home was by the flashing lights. I just picked up a red one recently for 5 bucks at a pawn shop, but havent used it yet.

I leave lights on in my brood loft 24-7 and at night it slightly lights up my kit boxes i havnt had a night overfly yet nock on wood.Does millet realy give that much of a bang to the birds? I just bought a bag of pearl top millet to plant for my horses and it was $37.45 liked to messed my pants it wasnt but $18.00 bucks last year and 3-15-30 fertilizer was $300 bucks a ton last year and $645 a ton this year so roughly last year it cost $168 bucks per acre and this year it would be about $360 a acre which i cant afford so maybee it will grow without fertilizer lol.

Ty, I mix my own feed and millet is one of the ingredients now! I start them out from day one and they get it as part of their diet everyday, until they are 5 or 6 months old! Then they only get it about once a week when I feed them up! Then I give them 2 days rest! Haven't had a problem with it since!

I'm still leary of it! Got tired of setting up the landing lights!LOL

Don't need the attention living here in the middle of town!

Hi J,
I have to add to your post about the feed change taking 4 or 5 days to see any affect.
I think you can change the amount of a seed they are used to,and, it might take a while to change their fly habits. But, a sudden change to a seed they are not used to, can change them overnight or sooner. This has been my experience. I have also played with the millet and even canary seed, and seen almost instant results.
I even hate to say, but I knew the outcome of Vals story before I read it. I`ve been there and had the same results, well, except I flew in the morning and didnt get them in till late in the day.
I personally wouldnt recommend anyone to try the millet... but, we all have a tendency to go with the " gotta see it to believe it"...
Sorry for dragging up an old post. I`ve been out so long, and finally got access to a computer. Ye Ha
