Hey gang, advice or comments please. This will be my first year flying world cup. I started in March with this kit after a long lock down. I`ve never tried 20 birds. I started with 22 and am now down to 16. Mostly due to culling for non kitting or not wanting to fly the time. The base for this kit was my 11 bird kit from last year, 05 birds, and the rest were from 06 holdovers that I thought had some promise. I`d really like to fly the full 20 birds.

Question... I fly june 2nd. Is there enough time to put new birds in and get them in shape and do you think they will gel with the original birds in time to evaluate non kitters from birds that just maybe dont think they are a part of that kit yet? Any tips or thoughts on this process?

20 birds is definately harder than 11. I`ll be happy just to get a scoreable break. There are some birds capable of doing that if I dont screw them up. thanks,... Butch

Butch,

You can fly 16 birds. I do not believe you have time to work another bird in and the new bird may affect negetively on the kit.

If you fly on June 2....you should be able to add some birds to the team....my rule of thumb is 10 days from the comp...my kit is usually set by them no matter what...unless I am below the min...number...then I will add birds. I would add the birds and fly them and see what happens. Don't judge them until they have at least got a week of flying with the team. It is easier to pull birds then add the birds...so if they can't hang you can pull them.

Nick is right...that you do not have to worry if you have 16 birds....you don't have to fly 20 birds...I only flew 17 for the W/C....If you have birds that you feel will add to the team...then fly them with the team for a couple of weeks and if they do not pan out...then pull them 2 weeks out from you fly......or pull a couple at a time...a month is enought time...but again...I do not know your family of birds or how they act...just try it and see.

thanks guys, I was wondering if 20 that work would maybe have a chance to score better. Just off hand, does anyone know if most well placing kits in the WC were flying 20 or were they flying less birds?

For me it is always 20, no less. But that is just me. For you it sounds like you want to add young birds since you talked about kitting, etc? I wouldn't do that, just fly what you've got. Young birds that are only a few months old will jack a good older kit up real quick. Now if you are talking about older proven rollers to add, no problem. I add and subtract all of the time. As long as they manage like the others, there is nothing wrong with adding performing rollers of sound minds to a comp kit. I'm moving birds in and out up until the day of my comp flys all of the time.

thanks again men. The birds I`m trying to add are about 12 to 14 months old. They are all holdovers from last year. I would really like to get 20 together and do this thing right but it looks like I might have to settle for what I can get that will work together. Most of the holdovers have barely been flown this year and I think that is where the kitting problem is coming from.

If you have got 16 birds that work together dont think that you need to add 4 more just to get 20 up. Often times the extra birds if not performiong yet will cause the rest of the kit to fly through the breaks. The only rule I use is never fly 15 unless it is all you have.
To answer your question though you have plenty of time to work birds in but only do it if they are worthy of working in.
Buy the way I flew 17 birds this year and have won with 16 as well as 20 in the past. You just need a team that will work well together. Of course 20 will give you a better chance of 5 going at a time but only if the 20 will all work together and with style and depth. You add a bunch of 10 footers in and your depth multipliers will surely come down. Joe

thanks Joe. I am still working at getting 20 together but if they dont look right in a few more days I`ll fall back on the originals and hope for the best. I`ll be happy to see at least one scoreable break . If they dont DQ and I can put 5 points on the board in my first WC thats all that really matters to me this year. BUT, if I could get a few more points than that, well, yeee ha ! ! ! ! !
