Does the color ever effect the spinning of the bird?

This has been asked by most new people to the world of Rollers. It was been frequently debated. Each breeder tend to have a large majority of his birds be a certain color. This is due from the desire to reproduce from that individual breeders best. In some lofts it may be black; in another it may be red checks; yet in another it may be blue check; and another it may be ash reds.

A certain color does not make the best rollers. If that where the case you would only find that color in all performance breeder's lofts.

So, no certain color performs better than other colors. There is also discussions taking place about "hard colors" verses "soft colors". Those discussions and arguements go back aways, way back and it is still being argued and discussed. There has been a lot of material written about feather and as time goes by you will make your own decissions from observing, reading, discussing, and breeding your own. You will decide who to give credence to for what they say; for what they do.

You have also got to decide what you are looking for in the hobby: Performance or other endevors. In this forum it is the performance interest that is dominent and that is where the focuss is on.

Don't let opinions of others stunt your growth in this great hobby. Develope your own; stay open. The prof is always found in the pudding.

The most important thing is that you have fun.

Well said Nick....I had to take a second look tho to make sure that was your name at the bottom and not Brian Middaugh...LOL

Tripp, as stated, the color issue goes way back, even in performance type of rollers. Those that have been in the hobby for some time have come to the point that their at by sticking to what works in their loft, and that includes a certain color of bird.

Most will tell you that color has no relevence at all when talking performance of the bird. When a roller is rolling at 500 to 1000 feet, it is hard to determine what color it is, and that is where you want to be, judging the bird by what it does, versus a certain color.....

Now with that said, I have hard and soft colored birds in my loft. Many will tell ya to breed a hard with a soft to equal out the performance, meaning a black to Rec. Red, etc...When ya get going good in the hobby, just listen to what is said, and above all, experiment and take what works from your experimenting and use it....

Tripp understand your birds first then u may want to venture into the color theory color may be important color may not be important but as far as the better spinners that can cause a massive debate goodluck with whatever way you choose to go just enjoy them

Put a white flyted bird rolling against a light sky verses a blue sky and seeif thier isnt a difference.
Or vise versa with a blu checker , illusion does play in depending on the color.
As for color itself I have yet to see a good yellow , not saying that there may not be the odd one out there , I just havn't seen one , I have seen many roll , just not one with speed and qaulity.

Scott,
I've seen some decent yellows, bred from my friend Rodman Pasco,he called them Pasco golds. They were a branch off the Henderson line.I had some good ones about four years ago,I lost them in my first major overfly, and then they were gone.Theres a guy that ended up with the hen I was using,I'm going to give him a call and see how he's come along with them. One thing I noticed about that hen ,is when she threw a yellow it endeed up being a good bird.Although, some might have called them a reduced Rec.red...Aloha,Todd
