Keep an eye on that Lavender on the bottom. All my Ruby lavs, are either great kit birds or wizards in the air!!You will need more than 4 to work the line properly.Main thing is to hang on to what you have.Which is the challenge for any line you decide to work with,ENJOY!!....Aloha,Todd

Hey Chai, is there a reason your not flying the birds out to find out if they have the stuff to breed from or not?...Just curious

Hey Jerry, I recommend he not fly these but fly out their youngsters when the time comes.
What he needs is the gene-pool from a good family. He can select from the air with the first and subsequent generations. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

When starting out there are a few different ways to do it...getting proven breeders and fly the young, Getting a kit of squeeks and flying them and picking from the air, or getting young birds from a proven family and breed them and then fly the young.
Getting proven breeders is RARE..and COSTLY...but mostly rare. If you get a kit of squeeks from a good breeder and want to fly them....usually that only happens if the price was right....I can stand losing a couple squeeks I paid 15-20 dollars for...especially if I get 15 or so....Or you can get some young from a tight strain and just breed them..usually this happens if you paid a good bit of money for squeeks or they are a couple squeeks from a top notch breeder that usually does not give birds away...
For example...if Ken Billings said ...here are a couple of squeeks from my best pairs....If you fly those...you need to be hit in the head with a ball pean hammer.....LOL!!! or if you pay good money......you don't want to risk losing them....fly the young and pull the best.
Even proven breeders are still unproven in your loft...if you can't figure out the family...the proven breeders are usless!!! rock and ROLL

Hey George, the kid paid a wad of cash. He can fly their youngsters out. They come from proven breeders and it is the same gene-pool. He'll get the same and better and his share of culls. I know my family. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hi Tony If the 80/20 rule is correct then if I purchused 10 squekers only two would be the kind to breed from.
why waste few years breeding to find those two birds when you can fly them out and pick the best hen and cock
then use the rest for fosters.
just my opinion george

Hey Tony, just wanted to say Good Luck on your fly in a bit. I wanted to make it, but have family from Texas coming in about an hour now. I am gonna try to make it to Bobs in the morning, but if not, I will start at Bills for sure..If your gonna be there I will bring the mask if ya still need one.

Hey George, thanks for your thoughts. I believe you are not properly understanding the 80/20 Rule and how to gainfully exploit it.
When it is properly exploited using what is known as 16x, the "20%" is multiplied several times. The 80/20 Rule is merely a "natural" starting point. Most people do get stuck there.
To try and explain it in roller terms, perhaps thinking of it as "breed best to best and cull the rest". Eventually, through proper selection, you will SET certain traits and as a result, you will get a much higher percentage of birds exhibiting those desired traits; I like: roll-velocity-depth-control-type, etc.
For example; over the years, I have selected for these kinds of traits so that today for example, I am more likely to get a bird with these traits from a wider cross section of my birds than I would have back in the 1990's.
So, I would rather have a pair of my young birds from my breeders today than say from 1995 or 1999. Why? Because they exhibit/demonstrate more of the traits I am after and minimimal traits of the kind I don't want(non-kitters-roll downs-lack of control, etc).
If this is not the case, and you cannot set certain traits, then there is no logic in line-breeding or breeding best to best...
Like I said in "How To Breed Better Rollers", most established breeders already practice some of these concepts, they just don't use the same terminology I do coming from a business background. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Tony, I agree with you. With only 4 birds to start out he could lose em in pretty short order flying them now.Definately better to breed a load of youngfly 'em and pick breeeders to further progress. ---------- Kelly
