Are you locking your birds down because it is too hot; then locking them down because it is too cold; then locking them down because of the BOPs? So, what are you doing, flying them three or four months of the year?
If this is you, how much fun are you actually having?
Heat, wind, cold, rain, snow, and BOPs are part of the game. Sometimes you win; sometimes you loose. I hate it when I loose, but I am not going to subject everyone else to my loss. You can't please all the people all of the time, but you can please some of the people some of the time and all of the people some of the time.....well you know what Abreham Lincoln was trying to say, but hell he was of the old school so what the hell did he know.
Put up or shut up. Let the powers that be........well be. If you don't like them then vote someone else in when the time comes to elect.
If they decide to have the Fall Fly prelims in April, put your birds up when scheduled. If you didn't like it vote in a new board ar election time.

Nick I personally dont lock down for heat or cold but you nor anybody else will decide if I lock down for the BOP. I flew for years year round and always found myself scraping to get enough birds to make up a kit and I was always watching the better of my birds getting taken by the preditors and I made a decision to change that and I will stand by that decision from then on out. BTW this isnt just a game to me these are living creatures that I chose to breed and take care of just as I would a dog or cat. Well maybe not a cat. But anyway I will do whatever I can to try to ensure they survive to adult maturity. Joe

I fly year round. I dont have a huge problem with preds, and most of all, I raise to fly, period. I dont blame the ones that do lock up, as Joe stated, to preserve the time and effort he has put forth, but to me, I like to see what I have raised get flown.

I agree with Joe to save the birds and they are creatures that we chose to breed. Also agree with Paul, I want some of that stuff.
Nick, I know where you are coming from. Excessive lock ups is not good. The same is true for not locking up at all and losing the majority of your good birds. Even losing your birds in an over-fly because the weather was not suitable to fly the birds but you flew them because you refuse to lock up. Common sense and logical thinking goes long way.

Now Nick! You really don't believe that hard line BS do you? Or are you trying to be tough? Just this mode of thinking can set back a novice until he learns thru trial and error that in this sport it's not tough that wins out in the end,it's smarts. Just that chest pumping reasoning has driven many a good rollerman to find another avenue with less frustrations! But, I know .....you were just talking out loud! LOL Otis

I have always locked down my birds through the Winter. This is just common sense here in the North West. I was taught this years ago when I used to race. If you want birds to fly in the spring LOCK THEM DOWN. BOP will leave you with nothing if you choose to ignore this.

My "A" team is only flown, maybe five months out of the year. I kick them back out slowly around mid April and fly them to the second week of July. They return to the air the third week of September and are then parked for the winter about the first or second week of November depending on the falcon. So it is around four months, maybe five that I get to fly the good kit. The rest of the kits are pretty much flown all year, with the B kit given time off to keep them from getting ate during the winter. Locking down the good kits during the mean times of the year will pay dividends that you will really see once you've done this for about three years. I've got over 30 potential A kit birds I can pick from to make up my comp kit for this weekend. Only protecting them allows that kind of option.

Brian,
excellent, logical approach. Sounds very similar to what Joe Urnob has been doing the last 3 or 4 years and we have seen his vastly improved results up in this area.
Excellent advice. Discipline is key. It takes self control to fly B teams and young birds when the hot A team is sitting in the next kitbox.

I think it becomes easier to do once a person has several kits to work with. For the guy with two or three kits of younger birds, it is hard not to fly them all. I almost always have five, six or even seven kits, so there is always something to fly to see birds fly, but I know better than to let the good ones out during some times of the year.
