Now that I have I asked most of the how to and what to do questions. Now I guess I should ask when do you start breeding young and when do you stop and can you make them breed year round with a light?
Thanks Tripp

Tripp, That depends on the location that you live. I think you live near Nick, and if that is the case, then breeding year round would work as far as hatching young in the winter with lights/heat. The more concernable factor would be flying those young when the hawks are stationed in your area, just waiting to pick off the young while on the roof top. With that said, I paired up this Jan. and am on my 3rd round out of 10 pair. The winter before I paired up in March, and the year before that I breed year round, with light and heat in the loft. There are many factors that contribute to your success when breeding and raising young in the winter. Just be smart with them, and you will do just fine. ----------

Do you have a solid floor in your loft, the reason I ask is my floor is 1 inch expanded metal and my loft is about 8 inches off the ground so I would think that mine is colder than a loft with a wood floor and what kind of heat did you use?

My loft floor is 3/4 concrete and 1/4 wood pellets. I used just a plain ol' electric heater.
With your being wire floor, it would be harder to keep up above freezing temps, unless you placed 1/2" plywood down over the top just for the colder months.

Tripp. Most guys stop breeding when they come into the moult(Aug,Sept.)and start up again in Feb mar if loft conditions permit.I' live on the wet coast so paired up in Dec and happy with the results so far. Some let their birds breed right through but a bird recovers from the moult easier if not raising young. ---------- Kelly

Tripp, I pair up in January. I use heat lights. Mostly wooden floor,48x48 with a 12x18 grate for ventilation and cleaning. I have bred 28 squeaks from 3 pairs and 6 fosters. Have 6 chicks and 12 eggs right now and working on the third major round. I run one single experimental pair and change the pair a couple of times a season. With this system I can raise 20 every thirty days. ---------- V99 Flippin`The Bird!
