I just went through my loft and split up the current pairs and repaired to seven new pairs, Question is I locked all the pairs up in a nest box last night and I'm wondering if I should have split all the cocks and hens for three days and then reintroduced? W/O a separate cock and hen loft I have to keep all my breeding birds in the same loft. Wondering if I screwed up or if in a week they will get over it and hook up with their new partners?

Thanks,

Matt

If you pair them up too quickly after breaking the old pair up, the hen is not quite ready to accept a new mate. This could lead to her getting pecked pretty bad as the cock will go after her with a vengence especially if he is in his same old nest box.

You would do well to build another pen so you can separate the genders for 2 to 3 weeks before pairing them, also to rest them later when your breeding season is over.

I am breeding from 8 pairs and just split them up may 1st and put all the hen out of the cocks where they wont see them for a week, them i locked them up in there nest boxs all but to pairs are on eggs already with this new pairing. the others the cock is aggressive toward the hen.I will start letting one pair out a time till the hen knows her nestbox. I never change the cocks nestbox.

I had to rebuild the loft due to damage from the bobcat when it was moved so the birds have all been put back into the loft two days ago. No one claimed a box just yet, and I locked them up last night.

Tony...you are right on the pecking thing, watched them for about 2-3 hrs last night and everyone was being pretty good. I'll head back down today and if I see anything getting out of hand I'll get them out of there. Problem is with the birds not on my property it makes it hard to do anything with them. Any one want to buy a nice ranch house in the burbs of OH? ;)
