Yea, I wait until they can pick up seeds and eat for themselves, but sometime I wait until the parents kick them out, that's when I know for sure that they are on their own.

The sooner the better; the two inch tail feathers is a good one; having feathers on the body underneath the wing(arm pit); starting to peck around on floor; and there are other indicators. Develope them as quickly as possible.

When they are pretty well feathered, but still having down on them I put them to the floor. I observe them everyday and look for the formentioned indicators and them move them to the kitbox when they demonstrate any of the indicators. Some will develope quicker than others so to put a calander on them may not work.

I wean 'em at about 21-22 days old and they're in the kit box 4 or 5 days later after they prove they can eat or drink. Getting them going this early seems to help me a bunch with trap training them because of course they can't fly real well yet. I never have trapping issues anymore as compared to when I used to wean at about 4 weeks instead of 3.

Bud,
there are good posts so far, but let me add...

There are variables that determine when a bird goes into the kitbox. As stated, the feather under the wing is a good indicator. I do as most and watch for them to peck at the feed for 2 days or so, and then place them into the kitbox.
When placing into the kitbox, I dunk each birds beak into the water to get them accustomed to where to look for their next drink....
There will also be times when you may need to replace a young back with it's parents for a quick meal, then back into the kitbox...
I am a believer in the earlier the better..Very rearly are my young able to flap their wings and get an inch off the ground before they are in the kitbox...Saves on them flying off first time out.

Mine go on the floor when the tail is an inch or so. They go on "field trips" to their new home. I usually leave them in the kitbox for a few hours a day, housing them back with the parents for a few nights.

My small rounds(6) are ten days apart. They have ten days to get it together before the next group comes in.Usually it works just fine. They love the new box as do I. The dowel door is the bomb.

PMV is the deadliest disease to pigeons. It makes the birds twist their nicks backward and make them walk backward. They usually die in few days after that. It is contagious and will spread like butter in your loft. If you can treat some of them, they will become carrier to that disease and the cycle will never end.

what every body else said...LOL!! As soon as I see them start picking seeds on there own...they are in the kit box. Now...If I have a bunch of squeeks on the floor and they are all about the same age...I move them all as soon as one starts eating on its own or pecking around. Even if the others are not ready....they will be...because with squeeks...its monkey see monkey do...so if a couple are eating the rest will eat.

I do the same thing Paul. Usually when their tair about an inch and half they start peking on food. That's when they move to the weening kitbox.

how long do you keep em in before letting them out do you just open up and let them do there own thing or put them on the roof at this early age and just let them get to the air in their own time
