I may be reading this wrong but my understanding is that we are at fault because our birds we breed, have a fault and they attract the BOPs cause they roll and look like an easy target.

Does that mean that the sheep farmer or the goat farmer shouldn't complain when the cougar or wolf attacks their herds for looking too tasty! What about the fainting goat?

Sounds like discrimination to me!

You all can erase this if it is not to be discussed, but I'm confused!

I understand that we can't take the law into our own hands, but trapping and relocation should be a must if we have a problem on our property! They need to come up with a solution even though its pigeons and not livestock! They ought to show alternitives to the problem and show us another option to protecting our property before convicting us! JMO

All it is....well..is the press making something out of nothing...or the uneducated. The raptors are hungry and just doing what they do...they go after Robins, Doves, Homing pigeons, commie pigeons, woodpeckers, quails and the list goes on. The rolling does not attract the raptors...them being a meal attracts the raptors...I myself have NEVER had a roller get hit in the middle of a roll by a coopers. It is at landing or take off....I have never had one catch one of my birds when they are already on the wing...I actually don't even worry...not to say it would not happen. The fact is...all the raptor sees is a flock of birds taking off and landing...and they know that is there chance to attack...because the birds are slow at that point....The besides landing and taking off....they have snagged a couple of my young birds that don't know any better....

My old team of rollers know what a hawk is and they won't even come out of the kit box...they know the hawk is there....they will stay up for hours until the hawk leaves...I honestly do not think it is the rolling...I think it is a flock of birds ...taking off and landing and all they have to do is wait for us to release them..so they can get them when our birds are trying to accelerate...and they know that they have to land sometime.

Part of the problem is us...we keep feeding the raptors....if I get hit...I wait a week or so.....if I continue to get his..I lock them down....that is it plain and simple...as for my old birds...I just rotate fly times...I NEVER fly after a storm or before...because they are real hungry..and never fly early morning..they wake up..yawn...and then look for food..that simple.

rock and ROLL

Paul

Homer guys get hit hard too....I really do not think it is the rolling as much as the flock..taking off...
I am talking of Coopers...Falcons are a different story..they are made to kill and they will...period....so in a nut shell it is all theory....

Well said Paul.On the other topic of protection of our birds, the world is getting smaller as our human population gets bigger. As more land everywhere is turned to farmland, species dissapear and man takes over with very little wildlife present in some parts of the world. When will we stop altering the landscape of this planet?Never. When will we stop reducing the diversity of the species on earth?Probably never. The debate about which species is the correct one to protect will always be fought over and usually the powers that be will protect mans best interests.I don't beleive BOPs are going to decimate the songbird populations.Maybe man's actions on earth will, but BOPs have been around since long before man.We all have many differing thoughts on these subjects and the discussion will go on for some time,I'm sure.I wish I could express my thoughts a little better, but hope I haven't offended anyone.----------

Nope, not at all, one of the attractions for me here is all the opinions you get and from all different places in the country and even the world to a degree! Interesting how different people think. I do believe it takes all kinds, even Cuban Canadians! LOL

I won't agree with you on the fact that you think your a better carpenter than me though. I've seen that big red pimple you call a kit box! Don't know how you get your birds to return to that damn thing! Hehehehehe If I was your neighbor I would have to complain! LOL Do take my hat off to ya on your yard though!

Paul is right , I have heard the rolling thing attracting them and them honing in on the best , but I have never found this to be the case.
I have allways found that they hit when given the chance regardless.
I am just not sure that the breed can thrive in many areas has it has done due to recent events, the fact is there are some locals that will make it impossible.
This is a new erra and we have no choice to change with it , all clubs must set in by -laws that harming raptors is unacceptable and will not be tolorated , and it must be inforced other wise the wrath will be opon us once again.
The Gov. went to war on the leaderships of the lagest clubs in the country including W/C director on to W/C assistant dir.
I think Texas was targeted due to up until this last fly the Fall Fly director was from Texas.
They also seemed to have targeted areas with heavy Falcon populations , LA area and Ore /Wash which also have condenced flyers.
One big big problem is the ANIMAL RIGHTS taking us into thier sights, WE CANNOT FIGHT THEM OR TURN THEM ONTO OUR SIDE.
The more we try and fight them the harder they will push , laying low and keeping our mouths shut is our only defence, like it or not we are "ant" shit , many are allready getting hate mail and threatening phone calls.
It is time to shrink into our own backyards and enjoy our birds on a smaller scale , and we MUST police our own.

I hate to say it Scott, but i don't agree with you on this one.Coming together as pigeon fanciers, not just Birmingham breeders or Homing pigeon breeders but as Pigeon Fanciers who have the right to protect our birds and our sport(Obviously in a legal manner) is the way to fight back.I believe we have rights.Unfortunately sometimes you have to fight to get them.If we don't organize and fight for each other then our sport is truly in deep (Edited)!ok i'll say it nicer.........deep doo doo!

Many questions... but no answers.

I thought we were preserving the roll in pigeons? Where is our place in history?

If we don't preserve the roll and no more rollers are bred.... what would happen?

Could they possibly go extinct?

What we need is the Audubon Society to help us protect this rare breed of performing bird.

Remember what happened to the Passenger Pigeon!

Marcus,
The Audubon society pit out a $1200.00 reward for info leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone harrassing trapping or killing a BOP.
