Here is an article I though was interesting and worth your time if you use the stuff or are thinking about using it.
THE DIRT ON DIATOMACEOUS EARTH 'DE' by K. J. Theodore
"First, by its very nature and structure, once ingested or inhaled, I don’t believe that the bird can expel this material easily, if at all. It is considered a serious human health risk if inhaled, and exposure to it occupationally has been the subject of much controversy with OSHA and NIOSH. It is believed to cause diseases such as lung cancer (silicosis), and carries some of the same risks as exposure to asbestos. You should never breath the dust created by DE if you work with it around your birds – wear a mask if you do." CLICK HERE TO READ FULL ARTICLE ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

I read it. This article, I believe, is merely his opinion and not based on any facts. There are no supportive arguments, links or footnotes about his research, if there is any research done by him in the first place.
DE is put on the floor under bedding to control insects not odder. I never read any where they mix it with flower to control clumping. Rather, it is mixed with flower, rice and others to control insects during exporting from country to country.
That is his opinion, which he is entitled to just like everybody else.

Hey Jay, good call, here is a link to the CDC.gov site, it appears they are not too concerned about it. Quoting from their page on NIOSH Publication No. 2005-149:
"Personal Protection & Sanitation (See protection) Skin: No recommendation Eyes: No recommendation Wash skin: No recommendation Remove: No recommendation Change: No recommendation
First Aid (See procedures) Eye: Irrigate immediately Breathing: Fresh air"
Looks pretty safe to me too but what is "pneumoconiosis"? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Now that's good to know:
"It is considered a serious human health risk if inhaled"
