I have a couple of youngsters in the YB kit rolling consistently (4 months old) Would it hurt to move them to the holdover kit? The holdover kit is small (6 birds) and get flown 2-3 times per week.---------- Ron Borderline lofts

Hey Ron, young kit birds tend to need more food than older kit birds and so mixing them could cause flying times to get out of sync. Some want to come in early and some fly longer.
I would wait until the young birds eat proportionally to what the older birds eat (1 tablespoon) and are flying about the same amount of time before I mixed them. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

I usually wait until about the 6 month mark before adding younger birds to older birds. By this time my family is coming into the roll well, and flying the length of time that the older birds fly.Usually no problems.

Four months is too young in my opinion; I wait until about 8 or 9 months. You will be surprised which birds will be ready at 8 or 9 months. Those four month old birds may not make the cut.
My opinion and I am a jerk so take it for what it is worth(LOL)

Ron, there are always going to be several 'it depends' that can be attached to such a question. Some families have to be flown hard when starting to roll and to physically and mentally develop along with this hard flying to build them up to withstand it. Other families it doesn't matter how much the younger birds are flown, or who they are flown with. It just depends on YOUR birds.
Personally I have no problem moving a 4 month old bird that is rolling to the older kit. My mode of operation is to move any young birds that are rolling consistently and not showing any problems, into the older B team. I want to get them away from the young bird frolicking and endless popcorn rolling that exists in most young kits that are coming into the roll. While they are learning to roll with consistency I want them to be in a flying environment that teaches them teamwork. I've had good success with this method. I moved a 2.5 month old bird to the A team for this very reason just a few months ago. It was a test as I felt this bird was just way too young to be exhibiting such mature performance and behavior. She passed the test and still continues to do so. She fit right into the A team on the first day and never looked back.
Personally I think you would be wise to move those birds to a hold over kit, as long as the hold over kit doesn't exhibit any bad behavior that will rub off on the new members such as high flying or flying on one wing. I think you will be surprised what will happen to that group (both young and hold over) when flown. The maturity of the older birds will help the young ones while the young ones will tend to inspire the older ones to roll more. Sometimes it is a perfect fit.

If I put young birds into my holdover team, they would starve! Talk about picking up bad habits, they would quickly develop the bad habit of landing early to eat cuz they be too hungry to want to fly.
Ron, if you are concerned about bad habits from "popcorn" rolling, start a second young bird team with the one or ones showing early promise and keep the feed amounts consistent with thier age and nutritional needs until they match the older team. That's how I would do it. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Yeah, break in that new kit box, Jerry! LOL
I've been letting a couple of my faster maturing YBs fly a little with the older kit, but I let them trap in their YB box for the feed! I just do this a couple times a week though!

Hey Val, Got ya covered..I FINALLY got them trapping in the new kitbox. The past 2 days I have had no straglers, so all is good. They are finally used to the wire floor also...Still gotta get it painted.

Hey guys, Lots of info, the problem is these two birds are performing very consistent,no blips yet.The rest of the kit is flying rather hard on one wing.I can move them up and feed them seperate from the older birds to make sure they are getting there share.I'll keep you posted.
