Breeding season has been good until now! So far 37 banded and only a couple single hatches and a couple of chicks lost in the nest. This week lost three more chicks and had ten eggs fail to hatch. All started out fertile, but all failed. No visible signs of a problem as far as there poop or anyone in distress. Previous rounds ok.Three chicks in other nest fat and happy.Fosters next door(seperated by wire) no problem.I pitched all the eggs and locked them back up in individual breeding coops.
I have 4 in1 spartix and 10/20 on hand.
Your advice is appreciated---------

Hey Ron, take a gander at the droppings, are they firm with a white cap on top (healthy) or something else?

I have found that after a few rounds breeders can get enteritis which is a bacterial infection of the gut. If not taken care of, e.coli. salmonella and paratyphoid can be close behind. All these will destroy fertile eggs.

When this happens, I will give them Neomycin 325 for 5 to 7 days. The droppings will firm up and then I follow with probios daily for a week. Works everytime I have done it.

Consult an avian veterinarian for a specific disgnosis and treatment plan for your circumstances.

Tony & Jay,
I took a good look at the droppings, look fine, firm, white cap.I think you are both right. As Jay knows we have had some unseasonably warm humid weather lately which might have aggraveted an underlying problem.I have started them on some meds as a precaution. Will follow up with pro-bios.

Might try Iodine in the breeders water this sure makes a difference. It should be done about two or three weeks before you mate the birds. I would suggest maybe once every other week while they are raising young. Not too late to start now but it is gettilng along in the season and with the hawks your young will not have enough time to develope before have to shut them in. Just a suggestion, bet your young will hatch after this treatment.
