"Pigeons like dogs, are creatures of habit, and if used correctly in thier early days they will eventually become a great pleasure to manage whether they are hungry or not". Pensom

"By whatever means the fancier chooses to make his birds fly, he should allow them to alight again at the first sign by any individual that he wants to drop. By frequent repetition, which might continue for several days, the whole flock will eventually take to the air of thier own accord and fly in close formation for long periods of time, much to the satisfaction of the owner". Pensom

P.S. I am going to re-read the whole damn book and I will pick out the things that I deem important and lay it out for the eyes of all who have NOT moved on to better and more modern ways of managing thier lofts. If it is poison to your sences don't read the crap! To you modern guys it is just BS anyway......right?

Nick, get laid or get drunk. Damn you are one grouchy old man..lol. Makes me want to pick on you even more with this old timer rhetoric. I'll read your posts, and reply whether you like it or not. If you can't accept that little thing called "progress" and choose to remain cast in the grave of the past, that is fine by me and others I'm sure. What you have to remember dude is that most of what you are posting is written in such a manner that most "newbies" won't understand exactly what it means. For instance, break down specifically, exactly and to the tee so that any newbie can understand those comments you posted above. Then try to convince them they are not just your interpretation of what he is saying.
I don't discredit the man for his contributions to this hobby. I have his book and read it when I got started. There are a few things in there that stuck with me. But none of it plays a role in what I do today with my birds. None of it. Does that mean that we shouldn't read such literature? No. It means that while some of it can be good to absorb whether it be accepted as educational or entertainment, the bottom line is that YOU and only YOU have the ability to learn and develop into a roller flyer that is proud of his accomplishments with his birds over the years. A book and quotes won't help someone achieve the momentum to get headed in the right direction.
Solid mentoring and explaining exactly why something happens and how to do things according to specifics is what teaches someone something.

I liken it to the Jimi Hendrix syndrome. Guitar magazines still emblazon his photo across the front in order to sell them - and he still does sell. The man was a legend and way ahead of his peers in the 1960s until his untimely death in 1970. However, he could only achieve so much in the environment of the time and progress has meant that some very clever musicians have taken things further.

When we spend too much time worshipping idols of the past, it often devalues the progress which has been made since, and also those who have pushed the boundaries so that progress can be acknowledged.

Going back to Pensom and it is known that he changed his views on certain roller matters as the years progressed. Wouldn't someone feel a fool if they religiously followed something he wrote in his book only to later find he'd changed his mind on that particular point?

I think we should remember also that Pensom was an articulate man where many of his peers were illiterate or semi-illiterate. He was able to use this to his advantage in writing his book. However, many of his chronicles would have been based on not only his obseravations, but also those of the many fine roller men around him.

I like to think of Pensom's book as an excellent study in all that was happening with rollers at that time. It seems as much a historical account as anything. But, I'm with Brian in that there's never a day goes by where I think of any one particular thing which Pensom wrote in that book. All my learning is based on my own observations and those of all the fine roller men which are around giving advice today.

Its funny the more times I read his book, the more I get out of it. The bible is the same way, must be an English thing.I agree with Nick, his book still has a value, for those in this day and age.

He is a nobody (lol). Just another old time English fancier who immigrated to the USA back in the stone ages.

Nick, if I recall correctly you had rollers many years ago and you've been back into rollers for about 3 years or so. Right?

Since you've been back into rollers, has Pensom's book been the major impact on your progress?

Russ,

I have been in and out of the Roller hobby some 56 years and there has been several people who have had an impact on me as far as this hobby goes. I am learning everyday. All of this information that comes from these several people still seem to be the same information that Pensom has gathered. I am believing that everything about this hobby, at least in the U.S. all comes through Smith and Pensom as well as the better strains of birds. I don't care how many years that pushes us away from the time that Pensom was alive and kicking the better we understand and utilize this very same information and techniques.

Even in this site the new generation's modern thoughts and techniques can be found within the writings of Pensom and others of the same era who where influenced by him.

The reason for me of doing the Pensom thing is so that the new guys can have some understanding about the Birmingham Roller. Even though it will be just a surface scan, I hope they will understand something basic about the Birmingham Roller and the champion Roller of today is no better than the champion Roller of yesterday.....we just have more of them because of the knowledge that can be gleened from sites like this one.

Blah, blah, blah, blab, blab, blab....so yes, Pensoms writings still have a major impact on what I do or don't do with my birds.

Nicksiders, What strain of birds do you raise? You seem to have alot of admiration for Pensom and all his knowledge, just wondering because I just started with a line of Coopers birds, which is a pensom strain. Pat

I fly a conglomeration of Hatcher; Smith; Norwoods; and Plona which are all Pensom based basically. In the US everything I believe comes through Pensom and/or Smith.

Pensons only problem was that the depth of his understanding of this breed was more than most could comprehend.
There is also much more to his writings than just a 131 page book.
