On occations(sp), I have a chance to fly in the mornings, usally spur of the moment type situations. Now that i am flying 2 and soon 3 kits, it would be nice to be flexible with my flying times! Since I keep the same feeding schedule, late evenings, they don't seem to be as hungry in the mornings and fly longer and then play around for a while before they trap. I'm guessing cut their feed a little more and keep them a little more hungry? I'm at about a cup and a half now for 20 birds with my oldest kit, which are just Jan/Feb birds! I probabaly double that for the younger ones! Any suggestions?

Hey Val,
I have flown twice daily for a few months now. My morning flys are for the most part at 7:15am, besides a few days that I fly at 6:15am..I fly again at 7pm..I give them half ration after their morning fly, then the other half after their evening fly. They trap within a minute or so at both feedings.

I am gonna only fly mornings soon, as the birds are starting to work well. I will continue to fly all young birds twice daily until 6 months of age.

Aloha Val,
I also fly at various times during the day. I feed my kit birds twice a day. Approximately 1/3 ration in the morning and 2/3 ration in the afternoon. This way whenever you fly, the birds will be expecting a little feed when they come in. Also you can fly the young birds twice a day with no problem.

I fly my young birds twice a day for 4 days and then on the 5th day just in the morining and then full rest on the 6th day and then start all over again. I feed them a half ration in the morning and a half ration in the evening...on the 5th and 6th day they get the full ration. I feed my young birds more feed then my teenage team and old bird team. I fly the young birds on that schedule until they come into the roll and then I promote those young birds to the Teenage team. I put birds together by performance...not age...so I will usually have my teenage team as I call it...mixed ages from anywhere from 4 to 8 months of age.

When the birds have earned the promotion from the young bird team...they will then get flown every other day...and a two day fly every now and then. I also play with the feed a little bit more. When they are young...they get mix all the time...in the teenage team..they get a full mix when they come in from there fly and then wheat and milo on the rest day...and cut back just a little tiny bit..I feed them based on how they are performing and how they feel in the hand. If I see that they are getting a little spun up...or to lean for a young bird...I will keep them on the mix again......

When you start getting the cream rising to the top and those few birds really start putting it together...they will get a shot in the A-team....most birds go right in with no problems...and actually get the old birds to shift into a higher performance gear....if the bird can't hang with the A-team...and get a little to excited...I will drop that bird back down again for a couple more weeks and then try again...usually they will settle down...after they have tested the water and they are thrown back into the pool LOL...they will usually swim just fine!

Feed is something that you really have to play with...my birds tell me when they need more mix or rest. Sometimes I will lock them down and put the mix to them and give them some good rest for three or four days...and then start flying them again. I handle my birds alot to make sure they are all getting enough grub...

During the moult...they get a lot more mix loaded with sauflower...there performance suffers and they do fly a little longer...but I don't care...I want them to get through the moult as fast as possible...as for the young birds..I do the same..they get mix most of the time. As for the late flys...if they hang out on the roof...I just cut them back a little at a time until they trap when they see me with the feed can and hear the whistle.

Hope this helps a little.

Helps alot! Went through these lessons on my first kit back in Jan./Feb. or so but I guess I slept since then! LOL

Lost a couple of rounds, so I needed a refresher! Have a large round up and another right behind it!

Damn newbies!

I too fly twice a day. Onece in the head of the day around 1pm with only 1/3 of the feed. They only fly for a short time. Then around 6:30-7pm the fly again. This time much longer and they also get the other 2/3 of the feed. I fly 22 birds right now feeding them 1&1/3 cup of feed (1 tbs.spoon per bird) with all the water they can drink. They seem quite happy with that and perform very good for me.
