I remember reading a post about grit already but i can't seem to find it. About how often do you guys feed them grit. As for the flyers how often do they get grit if any at all. Would this affect their performance? Thank-you, Tou.

Hey Tou,
My breeders have grit 24 hours a day year round..My kit birds get grit for one day a week. I usually place it in the kitbox midmorning and remove it befor fly time in the evening..I have not noticed a performance difference with or without.

My breeders get "pigeon Grit" 24hrs a day...seven days a week...three hundered sixty five days a year....LOL...I get the winners cup pigeon grit with granite and oyster shell and it is red...I also add about 8 pounds of additional oyster shell per bag of grit.

As for the flyers...I just toss a handfull of gret on top of the kit boxes. When the birds land after a fly..they well peck at what they need before they go into the kit box. I used to do it once a week ect....but now I just throw it on top of the box...and not worry about it...when it is gone I throw up some more.

If I lock them down for a week or so...I just put a couple tablespoons in there feeder at feeding time...and they eat the grit and the feed.

Paul,
Just a curious question. Does putting grit on the kitbox promote the birds to lolly gag around on the kitbox, instead of trapping right in. I could see where this could be a problem as far as BOP's are concerned, especially for you guys in the west. I am fortunate not to have a bad problem with BOP's, but still try to get my birds in as fast as possible.
I place my grit inside of an empty 1 gallon milk jug "plastic" and they eat at grit that way, same with my breeders..Very little mess and wasteage.

Jerry,

It does not affect the birds at all about hanging out on the roof....food is what they want not rocks..LOL...my birds will land....peck at a couple pieces of grit and call it good. I am usually watching my teams fly....and keep the trap closed until they land...so they have a litte "grace" period to peck around while I put the food in the trays and open the trap.....then they barrel in 4 birds trying to squeez through a 2 bird trap..LOL...so no they get a little grace period....The birds basically are ready to get right in the trap as soon as they land...but once they figure out that they have to wait for me to get the trays and open the trap...they start picking at the grit...but when the trap opens...they are in...in a second.

Now if I feel there is a hawk issue....the trap is open the second they land...and the food tray is loaded with food and ready to be put in the second they land.

Try it...you will see...

I just don't put the grit in anymore...because when I have the birds in good shape and hungry...I had some birds eat TO MUCH grit....or It would be another thing I would have to remember to do...when it is on the kit box...it is there when the birds want it.

understood Paul,
you have been around the game long enough to know what works, and what doesnt. The roof of my kitboxes are asphalt shingles, and I find them pecking now and then at the shingle trying to get the pebbles off..Heck, I may just place some grit on there to give em' something that they can actually have..LOL

That is usually in indication of when I place the grit container inside for them, when I see them pecking.

Jerry,

My roof is the same material....and I noticed my birds pecking too....That is what gave me the idea of throwing some grit on the roof.

By golly.... my kit box roof has asphalt on it also. And yes my birds sometimes peck at those little pebbles when they alight on top of the loft.

Hmm....

Debating on whether to throw grit on the roof though. I use a mason jar screwed onto a chick feeder to grit my flyers.
