Everyday when I go out to check on the birds, the first thing I do is check on the new hatchlings. I think I am as excited for the new babies as I am for any of them..
Well........ I went out to check on them yesterday morning and noticed after close counting that I had a pair of week old nestmates missing. I check high and low with no luck.. Last evening my wife and I go out so she could see the 10 new babies I had left, and when I opened the loft door, something didn't look right.
Inside a breeder box was a huge black snake, finishing his 2nd meal of the evening.
After all was said and done, he had eaten 5 babies. I was able to measure him as he laid there on the ground, just watching me..He measured 6' 7"..
Frustrating as hell.

No harm to human occured during this incident.

Jerry,
Is that those black snakes you see in the water out there in the mid west?

Hey Ray,
Justin is right. A black rat snake is a different type than the water moccasin. The black snake looks for his prey in grass, fields,my pigeon loft, etc..LOL

Still haven't found how he got in, but he did.

Jerry, How in the world could a snake get in your loft, especially one that large? Mouseproof is certainly snakeproof!
How do you keep out mice and rats? Best of Luck.........Otis

good question Otis. I have seen the occasional mouse, maybe 1 or 2 a year, but have a live trap that catches them. The largest opening I could find was the size of chicken wire that I use on the avery.. He is gone now...Last year I had one get in the kitbox and swallow a year old bird alive.. That was a surprise when I opened the door at 6am to let them fly and seen that sucker!
