I don't know but tell me what you all think about this. I was flying my birds yesterday...my A-team went up first and went pretty high...they were up for quite awhile...so I decided to let my young birds out...because they would fly lower. So both teams were up...one high and one low.

Then out of nowhere I had a falcon come in and hit one of my birds. I have not seen a coopers in months and have never seen a falcon in my area. Anyway..he hit one bird but did not get it. The falcon would attack from the side and actually chase the birds...instead of circling around and diving on them...then the falcon kept hitting from the sides and not from above the kit. Anyway..my resident red tails that have a nest near buy..started chasing the falcon and chirping like crazy...the falcon did not even care about the red tail..he just kept going after the pigeons. The red tail was pissed and was right on the falcons tail...

I then noticed that the falcon was carrying something..so I got out the binocs to take a closer look. The Falcon had strapping around its legs.

Talking to an ex falconer..the falcon was an imprinted hybrid..and the straps were what falconers use to control there birds....anyway...The ex falconer that I know said it was a hybrid by the way it attacked..it attacked from the side and tried to over power the birds in chase not dive...he explained that is how the hybrids hunt...then the falcon all of a sudden started flying..not diving down...but flying down about a 1/2 mile away.

To me it seems like my birds were being hit on purpose....it all adds up...the straps on the legs.....the way the bird attacked..and how the falcon did not leave when the redtails took chase....the falconer friend of mine also said the falcons are very high strung and nervous..and a regular falcon would have left the area if a pair of pissed off redtails protecting there nest took chase.

Was I being baited to try and get me to shoot at the falcon or something. I know there was another post on this site of a roller guy getting hit by a falcon that had the leather straps on his legs....I don't know..getting baited or getting attacked as retaliation.

I flew the birds today and not a falcon in the sky...I let up a retard kit first to see if it got hit..it didn't so I flew a couple kits..with no attack at all..everything was back to normal.

As Nick would say...wierd aint it!

Hey Paul, here is an idea, get yourself a video camera and have a couple friends agree to quickly come to your aid, next time that happens put out the call to them and "triangulate" on the falconer who released it, get him, his falcon, his license plate and whatever else might be useful to the fish and game and report him.

The rollers might be sitting ducks but we aren't, catch his a$$ on video and turn him in. I have to believe that intentionally hunting someone elses livestock within city limits is against the rules??

Would these type of persons stand to lose their falconry permits for intentionally hunting a domesticated animal within city limits?

These guys aren't little gods who can go around subjecting us roller people to their brand of perverted justice, the majority of us are law-abiding citizens caught up in the backwash of some alleged bad apples.

Can someone enlighten us on the possible legalitys of the faloner to maliciously hunt our property?

If this is going on by some falconers who are "seeking revenge" on the guys who are alleged to have illegally trapped bop by hurting an innocent by-stander, aren't they underestimating the willingness of MBTA compliant and law-abiding roller fanciers to involve law-enforcement in this wicked scheme to take the law into thier own hands? Just a thought.

I agree with you Tony....or is it fish and game trying to get someone to shoot at the falcon so they can bust them. Man...it makes me as nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

I guess it could have been lost....but the way it left made me think that it was under someones control.

As stated, the best solution if possible is to get a license plate number, and call your local conservation officer, or if that fails, then your local law enforcement and explain the situation. Speaking from experience, we usually wont handle conservation type issues, BUT will take all information and report it to the local agents.

Every year the few days leading up to rifle deer season we "sheriffs office" get several complaints of spot-lighting in the county. Tho the conservation agents are out in force, with us deputies out also we do assist them when possible.

Paul, if that doesn't work, and you do find a dumb ass turning his falcom loose on your birds, then my first instinct would be to open a can of WHOOP ASS!..just a thought.

Paul,

I believe there is a falconeers club in Davis. They might beable to give you some help or you can go over there and threaten 'em.(LOL)

What they can do is stay away from your neighborhood when flying their birds.....if they are a good organization.

Paul , it is doubtful that it was a set up as they value thier birds to much , but retaliation is not to far out of the question at all , shit who knows what they will stoop to though , but liabilty I am sure would be a real thought.
I have known others that were targeted by falconers purposly in the past, it's rare but does happen.

WELL FELLAS ,

A QUESTION ............... IS IT ILLEGAL TO SCARE BOP IN THE USA ? ..... OR JUST TO TRY AND KILL THEM ?

WHY ? .......... Well a friend of mine who races pigeons had loads of trouble with attacks on his kits when training round the lofts , he aqsked a local wildlife officer for ideas , after speaking to him ..... he fitted in his yard 4 feet long pipe on a swivel ... when he saw a bop flying over his place he sent a fireworks rocket up in that direction , a huge bang and the shower of sparks usually scared off the bop for good ......... he wasnt trying to kill them just scare them out of that area
just an idea ........

i know you fellas are under a lot of scrutiny ......... so if this post is inapropriate please delete it

all the best

About two weeks ago, I've lost track, I had a Coopers hawk with leather straps visit my birds. At first I thought it was someones lost pet, until I lodged on here and saw the post regarding other "pet" BOP visiting lofts around the country. The "pet" visited my loft at least twice that I know of. I don't want to sound like a nut case but there seems to be far to much of this type of activity to just be accidental. Those of you who have been in the roller sport for a long period can you remember this kind of thing ,tame BOP visits, happing in the past?

Paul,

I have never ever seen a falcon in my area ever until this year. He harassed my birds On Memorial Day and was successful and every few days afterward. Like some weeks I don’t see him and my birds fly fine. Then he appears out of nowhere all of a sudden every weekend only. It has been going on ever since. The falcon hunts the same exact way you described. When I looked in the binoculars, I see something on his legs.

Wayne, I will tell you that I have what is called a bird whistler. It is generally used to keep birds out of crops. I got this thing only because it was recommended by the DFG. They even sent me a listing of local dealers were I could purchase it. Joe

Have you had good results with the whistle and does it work?? Could be a good deterrent if this device works.

Joe,
I would like to know more about the whistle you are talking about.
And where you can purchase these whistles.
I hope thats OK Tony, asking for that type of information here.

On another note. I have been able to fly here with no problems at all this year.
Then the NBRC bulletin came out. Please don't take offense guys. I think you guys are doing a great job there. The point is 3 weeks ago, just after the bulletin was released. I started getting hit every day. Not like a normal BOP. This falcon would come onto my birds when they had not even got any higher then 80 feet. And about the same time every day. This went on for 4 days straight. Lost 3 birds that week. So, I started following the falcon after it got its breakfast. Sure enough. Some redneck in a SUV just sitting there eating breakfast himself, while his falcon is eating my bird just above him. Just one block away from my house. I let him know that I saw him and was carrying my video camera so he would know that I was onto him. Guess what, those attacks stopped. IM sure there will be more, but don't let these guys get away with this crap. Its like setting A pit bull loose on a bunch of poodles. Hell, if the guy just came to my house and needed some live feed, IM sure I would work something out with the guy. We all breed culls. They gotta go somewhere. But to pull up to someone house just to feed your pet from there yard. THAT SUCKS AND HAS TO BE AS ILIGLE AS SHOOTING OR TRAPPING THOSE PROTECTED BIRDS THEMSELVES.

Ray, you handled the situation in a very professional way!..Even with me a public server, I think my temper would have taken over. Not to provoke violence here guys, but wrong is wrong. I am from the old school, where if an ass whoopin' is called for, then that is what is gonna happin'. This is a great example of non equal rights when it comes to the BOP versus pigeon breeder.

Hope the prick stays away from your place.
