Bud,

They are still pretty young. It will take several days of getting them out of the kitbox and allowing them to land at their choice. Each time you will notice that thier flight time will increase and then on thier own they will begin to take short little bursts of flight. Then it will be like a light goes on and their flight time will be much larger. This will be followed by the urge to kit and you should see improvement until they are doing the things that will make you proud.

Training youngsters will try your patients. Every year we go through the same aggravation(LOL).

If they do not learn to come off that roof after several days I use tennis balls that are thrown up to the roof and on to it. They will get the message and it will not drive them away since they are already trapping.

Hang in there with them, they will get it.

Nick

Your pigeons look like there ready to flag up and scare um to fly. Just make sure you keep them hungry before you flag them up. Don't let them stay on the roof for to long because it will become a bad habit. If you have any older birds that are already broke have them at bay just in case you need to put them out to bring the young back if they get lost but i think you will have no probs.

Your birds ain't daft they know where the food lies. Put some other youngsters in a cage on top of your loft to encourage them to trap also. Don't over feed them bud. If they are going on the roof and coming down for food they are ready to flag. Like Nicksiders said make sure they have been up and down to the loft a few times before you finally flag them.

You're right to be cautious. There's a big difference between them sitting somewhere near to the loft and going up properly for the first time or two. My birds are lazy buggers as youngsters and I run out of patience when they sit around, with little interest in flying.

I usually start with a gentle scare to get them circling the loft area, then allow them to land. This gives them a brief look around the immediate area. However, it's when they go up properly that fingers have to be crossed. I've certainly had the odd one disappear over the house roofs never to return. But, I'd sooner lose one in settling than allow a number of them to get into the bad habit of roof or tree sitting.

It goes without saying that they should be hungry, so they'll trap quickly. I also do what Wayne does in that if a youngster hasn't returned after an initial flight, I let out a kit of older birds to try and bring it back. Sometimes the missing bird is just sitting in a tree nearby crapping itself because some nutter stuck a flag up its arse to get it flying. It soon comes back.
