Got a momma bird with two 3-day old babies. She has real watery eyes, nearly swollen shut! She is still eating and feeding so far. Started her on fish zole for canker and sulmet for respitory! After first day she looked better, but today she looks like she took a turn for the worst! Any suggestions? She is in my breeding loft. Afraid to move her with the babies so young, but will if suggested! Only other medicine I have is 4 in 1! Should I use it instead?

Val, is the cock not feeding and sitting the young also? I have had to remove a breeder and left the parenting to the other mate with no problems while treating the other. If your not sure what the sickness is, then the 4 in 1 "might" be a better choice. Do you see signs of canker or resp. issues?

remove her if she still has a mate that is still feeding the young.. I usually take out the hens and use the father as fosters when I end the breeding seasons.

Jerry, the only sign is watery eyes and nose, and she is somewhat puffed up! If it will quit freaking raining, I will go out and ck her. Has rained like 16 out of 20 days now! Just saw something swim past the back door! Think I will go frog gigging in the backyard tonight! LOL

LOL...That may have been a BOP swimming by for help. You could of atleast threw him a life preserver..
I am not sure with those signs. The nose and eye issue has me stumped. The puffyness I have seen, and will either give a vit/mineral to help, or will treat with 4-N-1 when I see it going downhill.
If you do treat it, yank it from the loft and the cock bird will handle house duty.
Tony might have a better idea... "Oh Tony, where are ya?"

Well, I swam out to the loft and she wasn't looking better, if anything, worse! Now she has moved over to a secluded perch, now I know she feels bad,(my wife does the same thing)!LOL I pulled her and put her in a seperate box with food and water/4 in 1! She fought me pretty hard when I grabbed her( my wife does that too), so shes not lathargic (sp)!
I talked to Tony a couple of days ago and he said get some tetracycline in her so I went to the feed store and the guy said sulmet was just as good! Salesmen! Now I'm in a bind and the clock is ticking!Could of had an order from Tony here by now!

LOL, if ya have any other young that you can foster the young to, if the cock wont take care of them, that might help ya. Sulmet may help, but if it was me, I might stick with the 4-N-1 for a few days. Hope she comes back to her feisty ways...the bird that is..LOL

well val since none of the old timers will tell you let this young guy tell you knock her in the head lol just kidding take her away from her babies and out of your breeding loft so they dont get it she has a bacterial infection from all the rain the cock will take care of the babies .i would go to your vet and ask him for some albon and try that it will fix her in my opinion hope it helps if not you have a long drive to come kick my ass lol.

Albon? That sure sounds like an old timers cure! How would you know about that being such a "young guy"?
Believe me, I've wanted to knock her in the head for years now!....Wait a minute, were you talking about the pigeon?

Val Dooley is correct that Albon is a great cure for most bacterial infections however use it sparingly. It is also very hard on the liver. Looking at the options I think it would be a good one to use though. Just be sure to run her on vitamins and electrolytes as well as a probiotic after the Albon treatment. Oh, uhhh, respiratory problem comes to mind, I would try tetracyclines ASAP. Meds are formulated and designed to work with certain parts of the body. TeTrAcYcLiNe...tEtRaCyClInE: For respiratory problems.

Val, I would give her a quick dose of a probiotic water soluble powder(mixed with water of course). Tony sells it. Even a syringe squirt down the throat as soon as possible, then let her drink a 1/2 teaspoon to a 2 cup mix herself. The probios helps her to fight off the bad germs using her own good restored immune system. I just cured a breeder hen that had a combination malady this way. I'd then use any kind of "cyclin" product after that! All the best, Otis

Otis, Thats direct injection method works well for immediate relief. I had a squeak with bad canker. Was coming out the sides of his mouth. I mixed a 1/4 tsp of 4n1 in three ccs of water and injected it down his throat after I cleared the junk out. He was cured after three days of this treatment. Gotta be careful not to get too much. Be reasonable in your dosage. ---------- V99 Flippin`The Bird!

Looks like a full recovery on my hen! Stopped at the vets office for a syringe to administer the tetracycline and come to find out, we have a new vet in town and he said he had some experience with pigeons, used to race them as a kid! He gave me a syringe full of Batril, said it was what he used on all birds with respitory problems! Said he was willing to bet his rep on it! So I came home about noon yesterday and gave it a couple drops down the throat! She looked horrible, couldn't see out her swollen eyes! This morning, you would have never thought she was sick!Gave her another dose this morning, put some vits and electrolites in her water and by mid afternoon, I threw her back in with her mate and babies, within minutes, she was feeding them! A few hours later my wife put a couple of bowls of water in for them to take their weekly bath and she even joined them! Acts like she feels pretty good! I sure didn't think she would make it!I will go ahead and dose her for a couple more days but I think we beat it!
Don't know if anyone else has tried Baytril, but maybe its worth a try! It sure worked for me, and quick!
Well, thought I might pass this on!Maybe someone else can benefit from it too!

Good news Val, Glad she perked up and started feeding the young. babies are stressful enough, and ad a sickness on top of that and she was in hell.
