This morning one of my birds had one big giant eye. He can't see from this side because it is ike 4 times bigger. DOes anyone know what this is? Should I separate him from all my other flyers or leave him. Tou

That is from contact with something. It rolled down, or rolled into another bird. It will heal completely in about 10-14 days if you rest it and don't fly it during that time.

It wont be the first time and it wont be the last time you will get a bird with a bruising big black eye its all part n parcel of flying Birmingham Rollers. Brian is absolutely right rest the bird for at least 2 weeks it will mend itself to look brand new.

What a relief! I didn't want to cull this bird. If this is the case then I'll rest the bird for a few days and see what happens. Thankyou, Tou.

If you have a bird that has a habit of banging itself on a monthly basis why don't you do the decent thing and cull it. Don't let the bird suffer its obviously an unstable bird you have there.

If it's a young bird it is maybe figuring things out.Bumping or rolling down can be a stage they sometimes go through and either they will straighten out or kill themselves.

True but i only give them 2 chances as a young bird then the third its a cull. It ain't good to watch a bird hurt itself through instability

If that is one of your best, just think you can raise a whole lot of them next year. Be kind cull them. Letting a bird hurt its self over and over is cruel. It is like out birds usually they are one of the best roller. Then all of a sudden you have a whole lot of out birds.

Like Richard said that bird you have cant control the roll. It cant physically put the brakes on so that makes that bird mentally unstable,
Everyone gets these birds once in a while and sometimes when in the air they are real good quality and it sure is a bummer. But unless you want a loft full of them cull it and breed away from the fault of this bird.

Some young do learn some don't but how many times can you watch a bird get its head bashed about? Its a thin line between stable and non stable birds. The birds that do learn should be noted because to me these birds sit bang in the middle of the stability ladder. Also would you ever breed from these young how ever good they turn out to be in the air because if the answer is yes you will end up with trouble and an unstable family of birds. Jmho

Wayne,
as Kel stated, they go thru their stages. I dont let a bird do it over and over. My wording should have said that I have "different" birds do that now and then..NEVER the same bird..I dont put up with that long!

As was stated also, are you going to fault a bird that rolls into another bird while in the air, therefore has a banged up head? Are you going to cull that bird also? I have had them land, and being 100% they didnt hit anything near the ground, but land with a swollen eye,head,etc...Those are not cullable birds in my neck of the woods..Maybe where you live.

You're right birds that hit another bird when performing isn't a cull in my neck of the woods or
WHERE I LIVE. Maybe i took what you was saying wrong i was just trying to get a point over unstable birds are culls and cruel and the way you worded your post looked just that.

I agree Wayne, and point taken.

those that have flown birds for some time, and are smarter and wiser, wouldn't put birds thru that. I have been around this a few years, and dont let it get as far as torturing the birds before they are discarded if they do hit more than a few times.

Roll down or bummper i see no differents There both going to end up the same way. They both cant control the roll.and should be culled.

After visiting this site for over a year now I decided to register just so I could ask a question about my best little hen. Before I got verified on this site, there was my question and several answers to it. My hen came in with the same big eye after hitting another bird while rolling. I didn't fly her for a couple of days and the eye got fine so I flew her again and she came back in with it swollen shut again. Now I will let her rest for 10 to 12 days and see if that works. I have gotten a lot of good tips from the people on this list, along with several good laughs. And if I have learned anything on this site it is to not mention the dreaded (color) word. oops now I've done it.
Thanks for all your help and info.

Welcome Bob,
as you stated, the eye contact is very possibly from hitting another bird while in flight. After a few days, it will be good do go, like before.

Yes, there are many funny guys on this list..Some you have to watch out for, and others you just...never mind.

welcome and post often.

COLOR??? what is that?..LOL
