Hey everyone, I hope everyone had a great 4th with lots of food and good times. Question: What strength of Saven Dust is safe to use on the birds and in the loft to control feather mites and lice?
Thanks, Thom

Hey Scott, Saven dust is sold in different strengths, I use #5 on my dog. What strength do you use on your birds and loft? Thanks, Thom

I allways just bought the stuff for gardens , it had roses on it , it says for pets also , but to be honest I didn't know that it came in different strengths , that is good to know. The 7 that I use allways looked the same as far as container whenever I bought it and I'm pretty sure I allways used the same product strength wise. I was just looking recently for it but the feed store only had another type that was for dusting poultry and garden use , I wanted it for the dogs.

#5 can be weak sometimes, but I think it should work for the little mites on pigeons. I know it doesn't work to good on chickens but kind of afraid to use any higher #, good ? I would like to know.

I have used the 5% for years on my pigeons with pretty good success. I have used the 10% in and around the lofts! I have many times used it in and under the nesting material! I put it in a piece of panty hose and just bang it around in the boxes and it makes a nice light dusting! I also just hold my birds up and pop them a few times with the 5%.

I used all of them and the 5% is the best so far you can go higher if you want it wont hurt the birds as long as you don't put a whole bunch on them just put a little and its safe to use on any animal even dogs cats all animals just don't let them eat it or it will make them sick ---------- The man in black city-side-lofts.piczo.com Ben the bird man of Idaho

Thanks everyone! I realy like this site! The input received per question always exceeds the need. It's great to have such a resource to depend on. I'm going to use the Siven #5 as the bag says it's safe for dogs and cats. Also Wal-Mart carries a powdered sugar dusting can used to decorate cakes. It produces a very fine powder and I think it would work just great for dusting the birds. About a buck fifty for each can.
Again thanks to all! Thom

Hey all, I just used the shaker with great results. It produced a fine powder that was easily controlled.
Bob, I have used Epson Salts before with good results, but I had forgotten! Senior Moment I guess? The Epson Salts also helps to brighten any white feathers.
Thanks to all. Thom
