I found this today..... both shells are hard, no wonder the chick could never get out if it wanted to.

If you look at the bottom half of the egg, you'll see the contents liquified, and would be fairly rank if broken open. An infertile egg generally stays clear and full inside for a long period of time, unless it gets really hot. When an embryo starts to develop and dies for some reason in the early stages, usually a week or so, the whole mass just, well basically liquifies for lack of a better term. You can always tell by the dark "liquid" half as shown here.

You can look at it in the dark with a small flashlight up against the egg and see better! Next time you have a new clutch of eggs laid, look at them every four or five days at night with a flashlight and watch the developemental stages! A few days before it hatches, about 80% of the egg will be dark and the rest will be an air pocket! I use a pen light! Swiped it from my wife (nurse), she thinks the kids took it! Shhhh!

Here I was waiting for this to egg to hatch, I was thinking the other egg hatched and this was about to hatch too, it looked like it had started to hatch with the cracking of the egg, but now looking looking at it in a different ling you must be right, the first one hatched eggs shell must have covered this egg making it look like it was hatching. THANKS!!
