This is often one of the big disappointments with rollers - finding out that birds which were good in the air, don't necessarily produce good birds themselves. So, the way forward is that you either obtain better breeders (usually difficult to find and probably costly), or you take the long road of breeding plenty yourself, in the hope you'll find some which are both good in the air and, further down the line, breed as good as or better than themselves.

In the meantime, you can keep breeding from your original birds because they just might produce the odd gem. However, one of the hardest parts is ridding yourself of all the rubbish you'll breed as well.

Kham,

Just a question how old are your young birds? Because they may just need time to mature.

If the are young they may not be ready to do 30 to 60 footers. You also got to be feeding the right stuff and the right amount to turn on the full roll.

Welcome to the site.........I noticed this was your first post

Is this the Tom Williams of Kansas City? If so, you can forget it. They will not roll. Period. This guy is a rip-off.

Well, I think you got a handle on the feed. Make sure you have a flying schedule that will bring out the best from them.

Did you witness the adults doing the bing breaks or is that info that the breeder told you? It may be that the breeder was exadurating the performance.

If you over fly them they will muscle up and become very athletic. Being very athletic, they will be prone to resisting the roll and it might explain the lack of depth. I would try flying them every third day or so for a while and see if that doesn't start to lengthen the roll.

A positive thing is that if you are not having rolldowns you have some stabilty in your birds.

Hang in there with them and make some modifications in what you're doing with them and take note if it is improving them.

Best to you.

Before you try to bring the birds down using wheat and milo alone remember you have to build the bird up before you bring them back down try give them a boost of peas to stimulate them into the roll 2 days before you fly them and you will see a difference that's if your birds have the motor like you guys say. Rest the birds for a couple of days before you kick them back out. Flying yearlings 2 times a day wont help.

You need to consider the weather, if it is very hot and humid; the birds won't fly high and long. Also need to consider the molt. Are they losing their feathers heavily? If it is so, you need to give them Safflower mixed with their feed and wait until they are done with the molt. If that is not the case also, then you need to consider de-worming them. They might have worms’ infestation and you need to de-worm them by giving them worm medication. That will get rid of the worms and the birds will get the full benefit of the nutrition which will give them their strength back. Worms will cause the birds to have sore wing joints and painful for the birds to fly high and long. It is most likely that is your problem if the parents were not de-wormed when you got them or you had humid weather for a few weeks. If that is not the case, then you need to consider giving them more feed until they start not to trap fast enough then cut down the feed slowly. Change your feed to good pigeon mix @ 16% protein or higher for a week or so. If none of the above work for you, then start from the top of my post one more time.

Pick the best you go from Tom, and fly them in your kit. Now go and get a real roller friend that will help you start out right.
