when you first started did you breed to have a kit of competitive rollers or just for the enjoyment of pigeons of all kind. When you first started out did, did you enjoy the company of your feathered friends? or did you hate them to the point where you only keep those who fit your program? It seems now competition has drowned the enjoyment of rollers and other pigeons...

When I first started I was capturing commies off of roofs and I did enjoy the birds big time. I also dabbled in Racing Homers; Nuns; Lahores; Show Kings; Show Homers; Old Dutch Tumblers; Doves; Geese; Ducks; Chickens; Crows; Goats; Hogs; Cattle; injured wild birds; a horse (a mistake)I found out that you can't have them all and still care for them properly.....so I picked my favorite bird.

Now, I still enjoy my bird big time and part of that enjoyment is competeing.

I like spending alot of time with my birds just to watch and handle them. I choose the Birmingham Roller because they where something you could watch in the backyard throughout thier entire performance; I like thier size and shape; I like the brightness in thier eyes and the displayed intellegence; I like to associate with other breeders; I was awestruck by thier performance and flight. I am thrilled that God has given me domain over these fantastic creatures.

I enjoyed them when I was five and had my first pigeons, when I was 10 and had my first loft with lots of pigeons breeds and when I am 40, with hundreds of pigeons....the only difference between then and now is when I was a kid, I had less responsibility and could allow myself to live in a dream day and night. With adulthood come responsibilities and less time to enjoy the birds compared to the times when we were kids.

Hello 916.....when first got interested in pigeons I got homing pigeons, for the pure enjoyment. Then I got into the aspect of training them to put into races. Got tired of that part after many years, so I decided to get into the rollers. Now thats what you call real ENTERTAINMENT. Not interested in the competition aspect at all. Just the pure ENJOYMENT and RELAXATION of them in the air.

I started out with Racing Homers that my cousin & brother were raising when my cousin was living in my house back in 94. The Homers were not my favorite, by chance a saw a kit of Rollers performing
in Garden Groce, CA. I just had to have
some good Rollers, it was an awesome sight to behold. The first person I visited was Richard Luna. He had lots of different color birds that had excellent
velocity, depth, style, etc. Bought a pair off him. Then probably the man who became my mentor, Bob Maunder of Santa Ana, CA. He had some of the best birds in CA. period. Bob never got upset when my brother & I asked endless questions,
too bad he got shut down by the city.
The reason I raise & train Rollers is because my undying love for the true Birmingham Roller. I've met so many nice
Roller Men, the friendships last a lifetime. This is the best hobby in the world.
