This is my reaponse to tail riding since observing it sixty-five plus year ago, My first stud of competion Birmingham rollers were purchased from Elmer Smith, Mr,Smith lived in Oakdale,Califurnia on a farmette,I met Mr, Smith in 1941 while attending Washinton grammar school. My grandmother Della Ruiz and ny mother Margie Sanchez drove us to his farm,We purchased sqeakers and breeders in all colors, All his rollers were tail riders until they developed into medium to deep spinning rollers,In those days the H style wing velocity to high velocity with the deepest spin was regarded the winner in competion, Everyone valued them number one for breeding,We flew twenty birds in competion with five short ten nedium and five deep as possible,If you had one or more deep birds you could win the fly over a kit that scored one quarter half turn or full turn, Just one deep bird could win the fly. If no one flew a deep spinner the flyer with the nost turns was declared the winner,I fleww balanced kits like this for many years, In the fiftees we flew the extra deep birds in small kits of five- ten in competion, The twenty bird kit with one quarter, half turn, three quarter, and full turn was flown seperly, One bird out no turns were scored and one bird down before twenty minutes the flyer was disqalified, I disagree with the distance the bird tail rides that it will eventually spin that deep, Some of these birds are flown in competion today but the bigest majority will never attain great high wing position in regard to a champion roller. I learned about those tail riders many, many, years ago.Get smart and purchase the best stock possible.

Yes it is true the best quality Birmingham rollers come into the spin very short and fast with good high style wing position. Some birds come into the spin deeper with the same good qualities and make good spinners. These birds have to be watched very closely because they dont have the maturity like an old bird If they dont hit any object or kill themself they can turn into great kit birds. I was lucky to purchase the very best stock the old Master Breeders from England and Northern America bred. This enabled me to understaned and learn the breed at a very much faster rate. Then i moved to Los Angeles in the early sixtees and studied with the great master breeder William Pensom and his student Ralph Hilton. They had me handle and judge every bird they had on there property. It was a thrill of a life time to study with them indeed I met them at several other places where other great roller men met in the USA.
